Self-Guided Arts & Culture Tour
The first Homewood-Brushton Self-Guided Arts &
Culture Tour takes place on Saturday, July 16 from
12PM - 4PM. Tour maps are available to guide
participants.
Maps are available at the Harambee registration
table. The tour is free and open to the public.
The tour will highlight art and cultural treasures in
the Homewood-Brushton community, both present
and no longer here, to those who live, work and
play in the neighborhood, as well as the greater
Pittsburgh area.
Tour participants will discover the streets and
places where jazz composer Billy Strayhon, famed
photographer Charles "Teenie" Harris, first Black
supermodel Naomi Sims, jazz musician Erroll
Garner and other trailblazers lived, learned,
worshipped and played. People will see notable
architecture and memorable destinations like
Mystery Manor, which was home to the National
Negro Opera Company - the first African-
American opera company in the country, and the
Carnegie library of Pittsburgh - Homewood
building - the last of the "Carnegie branches" built
while Andrew Carnegie was alive.
This effort is led by Operation Better Block, Inc.,
in association with the Homewood-Brushton
Business Association and Homewood Artist
Residency. The tour is organized by:
John Brewer, Jr., Historian and Author
