Elklan. Speech and Language Support for 3-5s%u00a9 Elklan Training Limited 2023 206S99.6.1 AL(Slides 272-273)%u2022 Phonology and learning additional languages is a complex issue.%u2022 Include these points if phonology problems with AL is relevant to the learners.%u2022 Each language a child speaks is acquired differently.%u2022 Each speech sound system associated with each language has a different acquisition pattern and a different set of developmental processes. %u2022 Some sounds may be present in one language but not the other. For example, in Arabic there is no %u2018p%u2019 sound. This means he may not perceive this sound in English.%u2022 Sounds used in one language do not automatically transfer to the other language. So a child may use a %u2018k%u2019 in Punjabi, Hindi and Guajerati but not in English.%u2022 Also, if a child struggles with one sound (process) in both languages, therapy targeting a sound in one language will not necessarily transfer to the other language. %u2022 It is common for children to use the speech and vowel system from their home language in the new language. This may impact on the intelligibility of the child as some of the sounds may be unfamiliar to the listener. As they develop the new language these will be replaced with the correct vowel sounds. 9.6.2 Listening and attention%u2022 Emphasise the need to develop listening and attention skills using their ideas and information given in previous sessions 2, 3 and 4 of the course.
