Speech and Language Support for 3-5s%u00a9 Elklan Training Limited 2023 208S9%u2022 Refer back to the slide %u2018Processes involved in saying words%u2019 and remind learners about the need to process information we hear.%u2022 This process is called %u2018The Speech Processing System%u2019.%u2022 Display slide 284 showing the link between speech processing and literacy.(Slide 276)%u2022 This theory was proposed by Stackhouse and Wells (1997). They suggest that the Speech Processing System is needed for clear speech and that part of the Speech Processing System is phonological awareness.9.8.1 Phonological awareness + reading%u2022 Stackhouse and Wells support the theory of a link between speech and literacy skills. The link is very close because both skills use the same processing system.%u2022 This means that problems or immature development of the phonological processing system may cause speech and later literacy difficulties. %u2022 Research by Bird, Bishop and Freeman (1995) suggests that children with persisting speech difficulties beyond 5%u00bd are very vulnerable to developing literacy problems.%u2022 More recent research by Hulme and Snowling (2011) confirms that delayed oral communication skills are linked to poor literacy development.%u2022 It is therefore very important in the pre-school environment to do all we can to encourage the pre-requisite language skills and phonological awareness.%u2022 Remind learners how important books and singing songs and rhymes are in supporting:o Speecho Languageo Awareness of letters and rhyme%u2022 Here we are talking about sharing books and songs between the child and a responsive adult rather than the child looking at a book on their own.
