Speech and Language Support for 3-5sS9%u2022 An ability to rhyme is important because it teaches the child to look at the structure of a word, how it actually sounds rather than focusing on what it means. e.g. a pre rhyming child would tell you when given the words %u2018hat%u2019, %u2018boat%u2019 and %u2018coat%u2019 that %u2018hat%u2019 and %u2018coat%u2019 rhyme because they are thinking of the word meaning not of the word structure. %u2022 Rhyming is dependent on pronouncing the words properly.9.10.3 Syllable awareness (ELB. 107, Slide 280)%u2022 We learn to read a new polysyllabic word by breaking it up into its constituent parts and sounding out each syllable.%u2022 Use slide 281 which shows %u2018uncohortatiously%u2019. How do the learners read it?(Slide 281)%u2022 We identify those syllables we can read easily and sound out phonetically those we don%u2019t. We can also identify common word strings and patterns within a word.%u2022 Ask learners to write %u2018antidisestablishmentarianism%u2019. Ask them how they achieved this.%u2022 Again, syllable awareness develops gradually. It starts with being able to feel the number of beats in a word, by 4 the child can clap the number of syllables in a word and by 5 he can state the number of syllables (as long as the child has the concept of number).
