Speech and Language Support for 3-5sS99.8.2 WHAT IS PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS?(ELB. 106, Slide 277)%u2022 Phonological awareness is the knowledge that sounds are the building blocks of words. %u2022 It is the ability to reflect on word structure. %u2022 This includes being aware of rhythm and patterns in words which includes syllable beats. %u2022 Words that sound similar but don%u2019t mean the same e.g. rhyming words. %u2022 Understanding that words are made up of different sounds. %u2022 Recognising that words have a different sound at the beginning or end. %u2022 Knowing what sound a word begins/ends with, how many syllables it has and what it rhymes with.%u2022 Before this, i.e. from birth, much of the Speech Processing System involves automatic analysis of words - the child does not consciously work out which sounds are used to form each word before being able to say it. 9.8.3 Does improving phonological awareness have benefits for the child with unclear speech?%u2022 Research suggests that improving phonological awareness is probably as beneficial to young children as working directly on speech sound production. (Hesket, Adams, Nightingale and Hall, 2000)%u2022 Phonological awareness is also needed for the development of reading and literacy.%u2022 Therefore all children in a pre-school setting could benefit from carefully planned and appropriate support with phonological awareness. This means that the child with unclear speech is not being singled out.%u2022 The child with unclear speech may find phonological awareness activities difficult.9.10.0 SUPPORTING PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS
