CHAPTER –8

                   1. Understand the nervous system of a human body.

1.1 Components of the nervous system

The nervous system is organized into two major systems:

                   a) Central nervous system (CNS)
                   Peripheral nervous system (PNS)

Diagram 2: Components of the nervous system

                   a) Central nervous system

The central nervous system (CNS) consists of.

                      Brain
                      Spinal cord

                   b) Peripheral nervous system

The peripheral nervous system (PNS) is a network of spinal and cranial nerves
linking the body to the brain and spinal cord. The PNS is further divided into:

 The autonomic nervous system which control the voluntary actions of
internal organs, blood vessels. Smooth and cardiac muscles. It consists
of the sympathetic nervous system and parasympathetic nervous
                          system.

 The somatic nervous system which controls the voluntary actions of skin,
                          bones, joints and skeletal muscle

                   2. Learn about the main components of the central nervous system.

Main structures involved in the central nervous system

                   2.1 Brain
The brain is the body's control centre and is one of the largest of adult organ,
consisting of over 100 billion neurons and weighing about 3 pounds it is
                   typically divided into four parts.

                   a) Cerebrum

                        Thought/memory.
