Fire and Consequential Loss Insurance
of claims:
(i) It is the primary duty of the insurer to observe good
faith not only at the pre-insurance stage and
during the currency of the policy, but also after
the occurrence of a loss. The insured has to act
as if uninsured and try to minimize his loss as
much as possible.
This is common law duty of an insured. Apart from
notifying the fire brigade, the insured should try his
best to extinguish the fire to prevent from spreading,
salvage the goods and try to protect them. Some
such examples are:
(a) A building may be so damaged by fire, to render it
dangerous to the adjoining properties. Partial
demolition or propping up of the structure may be
necessary.
(b) Damaged roof may cause further damage to the
contents by exposing them to rain and sunshine.
They may have to be covered or removed to
different places.
