Q1. List the common causes and fire hazards.
Ans. The following are the common causes and fire hazards:
(i) Electrical - This is the leading cause of industrial
fires, Firstly, there is the danger of sparks produced
during normal working hours, and secondly the danger
of overheating resulting from sparks.
The first hazard can be reduced by the careful selection
of equipment. The second hazard can be reduced by
using good quality of equipments and materials, and
high standard of workmanship in the installation process.
Frequent inspection and maintenance must be carried
out. Special attention must be given to the places
where hazardous substances are manufactured and
stored.
(ii) Smoking -This is a potential cause of fire almost
everywhere. Only discipline, control and education
can reduce this hazard.
