43. Reward for good work is more
work
Working with a Loan Officer
After four weeks training on basic concepts of practical banking, we were
asked to join respective branches for on the job training for 6 months. A
training schedule was given to us and to the Branch Head detailing out
month wise duty chart in various functional areas.
The very first day, I was asked to associate with a Loan Officer. I went to
him, introduced myself and requested for an assignment for the day. He
was very busy with some clients in the documentation process. I waited
and glanced around. I found one placard firmly fixed over his head on
the wall behind him that displayed: "Reward for hard work is more work".
It was very amusing statement and I thought this may not be correct.
But in later life even after 40 years from that date, I found the statement
was very true all along going by my personal experience. I would validate
this fact later by narrating many instances from my work life.
Interaction of overseas posted officers with the Chairman
I was attending a two weeks Orientation Program for overseas posted
Managers in Mumbai. The objective was to apprise them about different
work culture, mannerism, etiquettes, courtesies, eating habits as well as
risk factors etc. so that Managers get acclimatized there very fast without
making grave mistakes in their conduct within or outside the bank in
absence of such knowledge. It was focused on social and cultural divide,
social practices, dos and don'ts of conduct, major rules and regulations
and expectations of the bank from overseas posted Managers.
After a week, our Bank Chairman happened to be in Bombay and
interaction with all trainee Managers was fixed. He met us over high tea.
