How a diligent staff got promoted
The attendant of my department whom I have referred to repeatedly in
earlier pages, was actually a handicapped person. He had lost left leg up
to his knee and had artificial leg fixed. I saw him in pain sometimes due
to lack of lubrication etc. in the metal part of that leg, at times, used to
forget to do. I found him very enthusiastic about his work, very energetic
whole day, never disobeying me or others for that matter, always being
forthright. Many times he would humbly counsel me on some issues
saying I was a gentleman and new to the branch, so he was telling me
about the work culture there so that I did not face any avoidable problem.
I found him much more effective and efficient than even an able bodied
person. He was about 40 years old. I asked him about his educational
qualification to which he shyly replied that he had failed in 9th class. I
knew about promotion policy for attendants (subordinate staff) for the
clerical assistant post and told him about this. I encouraged him
repeatedly to make efforts to clear his 10th class exam through open
schooling to earn a Matriculation qualification to be eligible for
promotion. This was the only requirement and he already had the
required work experience.
One day, he was in acute pain due to excessive running around doing
duties as an attendant. I told him, "You could get freedom from this pain
if you have sedentary job not involving so much movements and for this
you must clear your 10th standard exam." He agreed to this. I
downloaded and got him the examination form, helped in filling up, got
his signature and helped him to submit. This was the episode that
