With regard to the target audiences, the focus will be divided on a
80/20 basis between the informal and formal audience.

The key messages to build the industry’s reputation (gain trust)
should be as follows:

 How is ASF spread?
 Action that can prevent the spread of ASF.
 Impact of ASF on the community, for example welfare, the
economy, food security and the environment.
 Industry growth – Success stories must be told.

Communication will take place with small-scale farmers via the BDM
App. The farmer’s information is logged in on-farm to ensure that all
the information is correct. The information will then be transferred
from the App to the SAPPO system.

The goal was to get the government officials to use the App as well.
The relevant information will then go to the correct people in the
different areas.

Board members took note of the R2 million surplus that was
allocated to the PPP scheme. SAPPO had invested the funds with
Santam in a self-assured scheme that will accrue 5,75% interest. The
money was ring-fenced for the purpose it was intended for. The
CEO and Chairman have a mandate to sign off on R2,5 million.

The Board took note that the CEO and Chairman invested the
funds in SANTAM’s Self Assured Scheme.

Compartments
Dr Peter Evans reported that 70 000 sows had been
compartmentalised. It is driven by consumers, and Pork360 also has
an influence.

The Board members commended Dr Peter Evans on the work done.

Airports
The meeting noted that DAFF had appointed a private investigator
to conduct investigations at OR Tambo and Cape Town airports to
determine what was being imported and what happens to the
galley waste. A report was awaited. Beagles were continuously
going through the luggage at the airports.
