Prof. Phlllip Strydom is known globally for his knowledge of and
expertise on meat.
Food Safety
Prof. Pieter Gous from the University of Stellenbosch with the
assistance of a research student will be conducting research on
food safety issues that need to be managed in the pork chain. The
recommendations from the research will be integrated into Pork360
standards.
The need for this research was driven by experiences during listeria
crisis when producers were forced by Enterprise, to do on-farm tests.
Dr Peter Evans explained that SAPPO had no scientific proof at that
time to insist that Enterprise should not test. The proposed detailed
desktop study be conducted as well as practical tests in different
parts of the chain to have scientific proof for future reference will
serve to protect the Quality Assurance programme.
AMR research
There is an NICD group (National Institute of Communicable
Diseases) wishing to conduct Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)
research including pig farms. Participation is voluntary. Dr Evans felt
that it could produce very positive results for the future and improve
consumer assurance. The more producers know, the better they
can protect themselves.
SAPPO should act as spokesperson between the veterinarians and
producers.
Decision:
The researchers should speak via SAPPO (Dr Evans) to be more
visible to SAPPO members. Dr Evans should speak to the producers
via the weekly newsletter. - EB 19/2019-31/07/2019
