8.1 Financial Reports
The meeting noted that Board members had approved the
financial report as presented in the board pack.
8.2 Consumer Assurance
ASF Awareness
The meeting noted that an ASF-awareness campaign would be
conducted with a view to the following:
- Using innovative methods to assist in changing behaviour among
small-scale farmers;
- SAPPO needs to become a trusted advisor to developing farmers
and continue to build its reputation by sharing its success stories
within the industry.
- The focus must be on pulling the industry together to improve food
safety as it concerns everyone.
- Given the socio-economic and political impact on the industry,
collaboration must be facilitated amongst stakeholders to
positively impact communities.
- Reference must be made to the virus in the pig and not to the virus
in pork.
- The focus should be on pig herd health and not on people.
- Emphasise what is worthwhile instead of what is worthless.
A distiction will be made between the following:
Informal and formal market
Input suppliers
Consumers in the informal market
Commercial farm workers
Different channels can be used for the awareness campaign.
Elucidation regarding ASF will be provided to veterinarians and
producers at the SAPPO AGM, and to veterinarians at the PVS AGM.
Dr Peter Evans will use the website and sms system to communicate
with producers.
The focus will be on the following:
- What is ASF scientifically?
- How does it affect me?
