THINKING STUDENT: ACTIVE INQUIRY AND CRITICAL
THINKING PRACTICES
Regarding to the first four specific media literacy competencies —
access, analysis and evaluation, creation and reflection — Casey
and Bruce suggest applying the Inquiry Cycle (ask-investigate-
create-discuss-reflect-ask again) in formal media and digital literacy
teaching and learning.
“Teachers should complete all aspects of the cycle by students to
ask stimulating questions, promoting reflection and guiding
inclusive discussion. Digital tools may be regarded as extending the
capacity of the teacher to guide the Inquiry Cycle. Pupils see the
same tools as objects of experience — they take pictures and
make recordings as a means of acting on the world.”
