WHAT IS ‘MEDIA&INFORMATION LITERACY’ ?

According to the definition given in the UNESCO documents,

Media&Information Literacy is an umbrella term that encompasses various

and evolving competencies required to navigate today’s increasingly complex

 communications environment.
The following terminologies being used by various actors around the world:

฀ Media literacy ฀ Information literacy ฀ Library literacy ฀ News literacy
฀ Social media literacy ฀ Privacy literacy ฀ Critical literacy ฀ Visual literacy
฀ Print literacy ฀ Computer literacy ฀ Internet literacy ฀ Digital literacy
฀ Cinema literacy ฀ Film literacy ฀ Games literacy ฀ Television literacy
฀ Advertising literacy ฀ AI literacy ฀ Data literacy ฀ Civic literacy
฀ Social and Emotional literacy ฀ Network literacy

The UNESCO definition combines three distinct areas – media
literacy, information literacy, digital literacy – under one

umbrella term: media and information literacy.

As for “media illiteracy,” its main danger is that a person might become an
easy object for all sorts of manipulation on the part of the media or become a
media addict, consuming all media products without discrimination.

This is why Media Education MUST become part and parcel of the school
 curriculum!
