Bricks

Bricks: A solid masonry unit of clay or shale formed into a rectangular prism while plastic and

burned or fired in a kiln.

            Brick Properties (Field Test)

            Colour: Uniform Red Colour

            Size: 230mm X 110mm X 70mm

Weight: 3 Kg ( normally) to 3.5 Kg

Sound: It should produce a clear metal-
lic sound when struck each other

Shape: uniform in size and shape with
sharp and square edges and parallel

Water absorption: It should be less
than 20% of its own dry weight for 24
            hours when immersed in water

         Various Brick Positions

When we build masonry wall with bricks, we keep the bricks in various position on wall. Interest-
ing design effects can be achieved through creative brickwork by simply placing brick in various

positions other than as a stretcher. In engineering, those brick positions are called in different
         names.

         Brick Positions:

Stretcher: A brick laid horizontally, flat with the long
side of the brick exposed on the outer face of a
                     wall.

Header: A brick laid flat with the short end of the
                     brick exposed.

Sailor: A brick laid vertically with the broad side ex-
                     posed.
