 Bucking Horse Sale Futurity
BABY I DU
by John Moorehouse
At just under 2-1 odds, Baby I Du was the No. 2 choice at the betting window for the Bucking Horse Sale Futurity, but when the race was over, the two-year-old gelding stood alone in the winner’s circle for the $30,000 stakes, held May 22 at Miles City.
Daisy Carlson and Joe Goggins own Baby I Du, who posted his first win and entered black type in one fell swoop. Baby I Du finished second in his May
8 futurity trial, posting a
:14.081 time on the 250-
yard trip that stood fourth
on the qualifying ladder.
Baby I Du came back and was even faster in his first-ever stakes final, covering the distance in :13.826 for an 80 speed index while running through a 5 mph crosswind. The $15,000 winner’s share
of the purse improved the gelding’s total earnings to
$15,550 in two career starts. All in all, not a bad beginning for the $18,000 Heritage Place Yearling Sale graduate.
Flag Ranch LLC bred Baby I Du, who
was foaled in Oklahoma out of Lil Baby Eagle, a 2014 mare who finished second in the 2017 running of the Gopher State Derby at Canterbury Park. The mare is a half-sister to RW Red Wave, who finished third in the 2011
Ruidoso Juvenile Invitational and Hawkin The Money, who was a runner up in the 2012 Dixie Downs Futurity. Lil Baby Eagle is also a half- sister to New Track Record setter Alittle Loving. Baby I Du is the mare’s first winner from only two starters.
Baby I Du traces back
to his third dam California Hi-Point Aged Mare Lil Bit Rusty, who won or placed in eight stakes races. She is the
dam of World Champion Whosleavingwho, who won 23 races from 47 races and was also named Champion 3-Year-Old Gelding.
Whooz Ya Daddy (Big Daddy Cartel-Shi D Anna) placed second for Cody Allred and Keller Livestock. Freddy Olmos trains the filly, who had Eric Ayala in the irons.
Yo Fifty Hot Rod (Fiftyshadezofgrey- Tanqery Dash) hit the board in third place. Gerald Kaul is the owner and Jesse Villegas is the trainer. Shance Birdrattler drew the riding assignment. The gelding won his only other start in the May 8 trials.
The remaining order of finish was Lil Shameless Rey (Eyesa Special Slim-Lil Shameless Angel), Pablito (Adashofjess-Pryors Chick) and Docs Follies (Docs Fast Prize-First Bunny Rockette). Cartels Chic and Sixs CB Axel were both scratched.
