DOUBLE CRUISE
by John Moorehouse
Double Cruise proved to be doubly successful in the Alberta Bred Maturity, winning this year’s $15,369 version of the event, held Oct. 7 at
Century Downs.
Already a multiple stakes winner, Double Cruise
collected his seventh victory in stakes company, representing the lion’s share of his nine career wins in 27 total starts. In addition to triumphing in the past two versions of this event, he won the 2022 running of the Alberta Stallion Stakes Maturity, the 2020 versions of the Alberta Bred Derby and Canada Cup Derby, and the 2019 Alberta Stallion Stakes Derby.
Given that past body of work, it’s
no surprise that Double Cruise was the overwhelming post-time favorite at less than 1-2 odds. Under jockey Martin Ortiz, the six-year-old gelding broke on top from the No. 4 gate and never looked back, opening
a 1/2-length at the first call, doubling that separation going into the stretch, and winning comfortably wire-to-wire by 2-lengths.
Tom Kenway owns, bred, and trains Double Cruise, who finished this 350-yard out in :17.705 for a 105 speed index. The $8,146 payday pushed his lifetime earnings into six figures at $104,162.
Timbers Express (First Timber-Daddys Express Girl) finished second for owner Shirley Laczo and trainer Brent Laczo. Corinne Andros was in the irons. Another of Kenway’s horses, Inseperable Cowgirl (Cowboy 109-My Serious Time) hit the board in third. Kenway also trains the filly, who had Daniel Garcia aboard.
The remaining official order of finish was Timbers Moon (First Timber-Wakeup Miss Moon), followed by Bearcat Bill (First Timber-Splashy Mamacita), who was disqualified from fourth to fifth for causing interference at the gate.
TIMBERS MOON
by Emily Paulk
Timbers Moon secured his first stakes victory in the $15,311 Century Downs Distance Series 4 on Oct. 21.
Ridden by Alan Rizo, Timbers Moon broke in fourth from the 2-post.
The gelding showed speed early to secure the lead early in the 770 yard race. He stayed in front the remainder of the race, to cross the wire with a 1/2-length lead.
Racing for breeders/owners Dakota & Brant Laczo, who also trains the gelding, Timbers Moon has hit the board in seven starts and the $8,115 winner’s share of the purse pushes his lifetime earningins to $27,818.
No stranger to stakes races, Timbers Moon was a finalist in three stakes events, including the Alberta Bred Maturity, Century Mile Distance Stakes and Sale Stakes Futurity.
The Laczo’s bred Timbers Moon is out of winner Wakeup Miss Moon. Timbers Moon is her first winner from three starters, including stakes finalist Movin Timber.
SS Pineapple (Cuivre River-Zillas Amour) was second under Bryan Desmond for owner Sazwan Speed Horses and trainer Carl Perry. The gelding won the Century Mile Distance Stakes in August. He also placed second in the Grand Prairie Distance Stakes and Century Mile Distance Stakes earlier this summer.
Big Boss (JD Wagon Boss-Big Miss Streak) and jockey Francisco Guerrero came in third
for owners Joe & Tracey Beckstead and trainer Buckey Stockwell. The gelding ran second in the August Century Mile Distance Stakes.
Trust Ella (Streakinisanattitude-Trusty Lass) was fourth and was followed by Power Maker (Power Jam TB-Cupids Special Fly to round out the field.
FLIGHT CLUB
by Elle Summers
Charles Stojan’s Flight Club added another stakes victory to his 2023 resumé in the $21,640 Century Downs Aged Invitational on Oct. 22.
With J.B. Botello aboard, the gray gelding went wire-to-wire, stopping the timer at :19.807 with a 1 1/2-legnth advantage and earning a 109 speed index.
This victory marks Flight Club’s fifth stakes win of the season, as well as his fifth consecutive win. His previous 2023 stakes wins include
the Classic Cup Maturity, Evergreen Park Championship Challenge, Century Mile Sprint Stakes, and the Century Mile Bonus Challenge. Flight Club is trained by William Leech. All told, Flight Club has won 11 stakes races and placed
in two more. He set a New Track Record for 300 yards during the 2022 Old Timers Classic and set
a New Track Record for 350 yards earlier this year during the Century Mile Bonus Challenge. He just missed a track record in this one, with Machete scoring a time of :19,805 in 2018.
Stojan bought the gelding at the 2019 Los Alamitos Equine Sale for $19,000 from breeder Steve Burns DVM. He is out of 2-time winner Seperate Flight, who has produced 5 winners from 7 starters. Seperate Flight was a runner-up in the 2019 AQRA-Turf Paradise Futurity. Flight Club is her only stakes winner.
Jessaprimadonna (One Sweet Jess-Favorite Primadonna) finished 2nd for owner Cindy Fehr. The 6-year-old mare is trained by Misael Moreno and D. Benitez had the riding assignment. Under jockey Francisco Guerrero, Firelicious (Walk Thru Fire-Zoomilicious) finished 3rd for owner Beckham Ranch & trainer Tim Rycroft. Followed by Timbers Express (First Timber-Daddys Express Girl), Bearcat Bill (Bearcat Bill-Splashy Mamacita), She Wears The Pantz (Separate Interest-Skinny Jeans), and Scarletts Cartel (Carters Cartel-Scarlett Jewel).
