The 1889 Futurity
APOLLITICAL STUNNER
by Danny Camp
Apollitical Stunner scored his first stakes victory in the $15,000 1889 Futurity at Canterbury Park on Aug. 11.
The gelding broke well from the 9-post under Nik Goodwin, spotting the leaders a length away. Showing grit and determination, Apollitical Stunner came on strong to finish a neck in front.
The pair completed the 350 yards in :18.202 to earn an 82 speed index. Apollitical Stunner earned the first place check of $6,300 for owner/breeder Legacy Ranch Inc. and trainer Robert Johnson, boosting his total bankroll to $11,490. He now has a race record of 4-2(1)-1-0.
Legacy Ranch bred Apollitical Stunner out of Gopher Derby winner Panther Prize Me, who is
a full sister to Silestone Stakes winner and Texas Hi-Point 3-Year-Old Filly Panther Purr and stakes placed Panther Purrfect. Panther Prize Me has produced 100% money earners from two starters. Apollitical Stunner is her first stakes winner.
Linda Parker’s Hasta Be A Moose (Hasta Be Fast-Toast To Gypsy) gave the field a big head start at the break, but ran down everyone except the winner. Ry Eikleberry was in the saddle for trainer Robert Johnson. The gelding was a finalist in the MQHRA Stallion Auctio Futurity earlier this year.
Fast Ivory James (Hasta Be Fast-Tickle The Ivorys) and Luis Valenzuela finished in third for owner Jesse Geditz and trainer Robert Johnson.
Aces Streekin Jesse (Jess Lips-Aces Beduino), Jess A Wild Time (One Sweet Jess-Royal Wild Time), Easter Eve Bug (Paint Me Perry-Dip
Down Dash), Splishsplashtknabath (First Place Eagle-Alambre), Jess A Brief Case (First Down Mr Jess-Briefcase Cash), DCR Miss Doubtfire (Dos Dashuino-Madam Doubtfire) and Yomarkmyeagle (First Place Eagle-Yo Mark My Emotion) completed the order of finish.
Cherry Creek Futurity
LEGENDS ON FIRE
by Tracy Gantz
Since returning to his native state of Colorado, Legends On Fire has put together a perfect record. He most recently captured the $62,175 Cherry Creek Futurity at Arapahoe Park as the 2-5 favorite on Aug. 5.
Fourth in his first start at Remington Park, Legends On Fire broke his maiden in his initial Arapahoe start and then won his July 19 Cherry Creek Futurity trial, qualifying the fastest. In the final, the gelding broke on top for jockey Jose Meza, led throughout the 330 yards, and scored by 1-length in :17.091, posting a 92 speed index.
Uriel Delgado trains Legends On Fire for owner/ breeder Margarito Montalvo. My Sweet Fire, the dam of Legends On Fire, started three times and beat only one horse, all of her starts at Los Alamitos for Montalvo. She is making up for that with a stakes winner from her first starter.
Jess Golondrina (Jess Cuervo-BP First Down Policy), who went off at 30-1, finished second under jockey Manuel Meza. Hugo Ontiveros trains the filly for owner Edy Arturo Ontiveros-Palacios. Jess Golondrina had won once in three previous starts. The filly won her July 19 trial, qualifying sixth.
Enrique Jesus Hernandez’s homebred Kiddys Lightnin Gold (Kiddy Up-Heebie Jeebie) finished third. Jhaciel Soto rode the filly, a winner once in 2 prior starts, for trainer Roberto Gomez, who was the fifth fastest qualifer with a third in her July 19 trial.
Dance Down Diva VC (Kiss My Hocks-BF Valentines Folly), Flirt With A Hottie (Capo De Capi-Make Money Anywhere), DG Forever Sweet (One Sweet Jess-Iza Sugar N Spice), Finally Excited (Jumpn Chic-Lestbeexcited), Golden Hawk (Zulu Dragon-Golden Special Pie), Behavin Good (Good Reason SA-Behavin Cartel), and Rich And Sassy (Capo De Capi-Be Gone With It) completed the order of finish. Twos Two was scratched.
Lucille Rowe Derby
KINA BIG DEAL
by Tracy Gantz
Juan Rodriguez has done well with his $13,000 investment in Kina Big Deal. Since the purchase, Kina Big Deal has started twice, finishing second
in his July 19 trial and winning the $52,570 Lucille Rowe Derby at Arapahoe Park on Aug. 5.
Going off at 4-1 under jockey Alfredo Triana Jr., Kina Big Deal broke third. Though he drifted out, he overhauled those in front of him to win by a neck in :18.055 for 350 yards, posting an 82 speed index.
Hipolito Michel-Valverde trains Kina Big Deal for Rodriguez, who bought the gelding at the 2020 Heritage Place Winter Mixed Sale. Vista Equine Colorado consigned Kina Big Deal for the estate of Thomas Bradbury and Lisa Beauprez. Previously, Kina Big Deal had won two races.
Bradbury and Beauprez bred Kina Big Deal out of winner Teller Sheza Doll, bred by Bradbury in partnership with Marvin Willhite. Teller Sheza Doll has produced six winners from eight starters, includ- ing stakes-placed Only Business.
Jose Lopez piloted DG Dreamer (One Dashing Eagle-Iza Sugar N Spice) to second for own-
ers Pedro and Lillia Andazola and trainer Haley Hobbs. DG Dreamer ran second in last year’s Cherry Creek Futurity.
Whatever You Think (Apollitical Jess-Hay
Gud Lookin) finished third under jockey Roman Chapa for owner George Seward and trainer Robert Johnson. Still a maiden, Whatever You Think previ- ously has run second twice and third twice.
Completing the field were Tainted Halo (Jess
Being Valiant-Make Money Zoomin), De Capitator Bar (Capo De Capi-Nikita Ben), Intocable Cartel (Coronado Cartel-Tahiti Wave), Legendary Find
(The Noble Legend-TR Finder), Captain Brave Heart (Captain Courage-Corona For You), Kooler Wagon (Desirio-Beaus Wagon), and Paint Can (Second Painted Sign-Just Like Bully). Jessinourbodgit was scratched.
