Alberta Stallion Stakes Futurity
SPICY CHILE
by John Moorehouse
Spicy Chile cooked up a victory in her stakes debut, winning the $31,900 Alberta Stallion Stakes Futurity by 3/4-length at Century Mile on Aug. 7. Buckey Stockwell trains Spicy Chile, who made an alert break from the 5-post then moved inward before righting her course and scoring the win with relative ease. The filly navigated a muddy track and benefited from a 15 mph tailwind.
Blandford Stewart was aboard for the futurity- winning trip, which took :16.051—surpassing her effort in the trials. The filly remains undefeated from her first two starts.
Bob McCutcheon home-bred the two-year-old filly, who won her July 24 trial in her maiden out, covering the 300 yards in :16.332 to tally the third- quickest qualifying time. The $14,355 prize from the Alberta Stallion Stakes Futurity finals improves her total lifetime earnings to $16,727.
McCutcheon also owns Miss Invictus Eh, the dam of Spicy Chile. The lightly raced 2012 mare has two offspring, with Spicy Chile being the first starter. Ulnvme To (First Timber-Ulvnme), the biggest longshot in the field at 60-1 odds, is owned by Riordan Oulton and trained by Allen Goodsell. Jockey O. Amador Hernandez did the riding. Jess Be First (First Timber-Ima Jess A Streaker) finished third by a neck for owners Ralph Wiber and Dwaine Ferguson. The Wesley Oulton trainee had Jose Rocha in the irons. The remaining order of finish was He Flys Bye (Special Fly Bye-Bet On Snow) in fourth, followed by Flyin Feelin (Special Fly Bye-Feelin The Fever) and Northforkhigh (Streakinisanattitude-Highnest). Fastest qualifier and post time favorite Jagnestimber (First Timber-Gilded Gold) stumbled leaving the gate, but recovered enough to place seventh and was followed
by Melody Moonshine (Six Packa Moonshine-Betsey Bea) and Bigtime Knockout (Teller Im Bigtime-Royal Knockout). Still Moonshine scratched.
Alberta Stallion Stakes Derby
TIMBERGOLD
by John Moorehouse
After finishing second in the Alberta Stallion Stakes Futurity a year ago, Timbergold returned to Century Mile as a three-year-old and scored her first stakes victory—taking first place in the $17,656 Alberta Stallion Stakes Derby on Aug. 7.
Timbergold has reached the winner’s circle twice in three starts thus far in 2020, including her 350- yard July 24 Alberta Stallino Stakes Derby trial in :18.295 to top the qualifying ladder.
Timbergold proved to be the fastest in the stakes final as well, breaking well from the 2-post, quickly grabbing the lead, and remaining in front. Joe Halerewich, Jack McCurdy, and Greg Campkin own Timbergold. Halerewich also trains the filly, who finished the derby in :17.951 for a 97 speed index with Dwight Lewis aboard. The win produced an $8,395 payday, increasing the filly’s total earnings to $28,733.
The filly was winless in 10 races as a rookie, with the runner-up effort in the Alberta Stallion Stakes Futurity arguably the chief highlight.
Roger Gauthier bred Timbergold, the first stakes winner out of winner Gilded Gold who was a finalist in the Ruidoso Derby Challenge-G3. She has pro- duced 100% money earners from three starters.
Double Cruise (BD Cruiser-Eye Cruise), who bested Timbergold in last year’s Alberta Stallion Stakes Futurity, finished second this time. Tom Kenway owns and trains the gelding, who had Martin Ortiz in the irons. Ralph Danard owns third-place finisher Ivory Fame (Ivory League-RD Taras Fame), a Kirsty Luft trainee with Trevor Simpson aboard.
Sasses Loki (First Timber-Sass N Dass), Yuma Class (Three Ten To Yuma B-Class Acte), First Pulse (First Timber-Snowbound Star Lady), Quarter Sawn (First Timber-Starlite Delight), Speedy Rae (Its All About Speed-Erica Rae), RJ Fly Bye (Special Fly Bye-RJ Bitterroot Babe) and First To Clear (First Timber- Howdoyado) completed the order of finish.
BOA GPR Champ. Challenge
STRIPSTEAK
by Danny Camp
Stripsteak seems to do his best running at Evergreen Park, six of his eleven wins have been there, his latest being the $45,255 Bank of America Evergreen Park Championship Challenge on Aug. 15. The gelding stepped away from the 5-post in second and got the first call under rider Ricardo Moreno. They continued to hold the lead, which
was never in doubt, and crossed the wire 2-lengths
in front. They completed the 440 yards in :22.417, posting an 89 speed index. The gelding brought home the $22,174 winner’s share of the purse for owner Charles Stojan and trainer William Leech. Stripsteak now has a race record of 19-11(5)- 2-1(1). His other stakes victories include the 2019 Evergreen Park Championship Challenge, 2018 Canada Cup Derby and 2018 Peace Country Derby. Steve Burns DVM bred Stripsteak out of winner Ruths Chris. She has produced 100% money earners from 12 starters, including top earner Black Fryday, winner of the Southern California Derby-G2 and Governor’s Cup Derby-RG3. Stripsteak is her second stakes winner.
Honor The Fast Man (Honor The Perry-Buckle High) and Martin Ortiz ran a gritty race to bank second place money for owner/trainer Tom Kenway. The gelding has won four stakes races, including the Grand Prairie 440 Stakes, Canada Cup Derby and Alberta Bred Derby.
Scarface Judge (Judge Cash-Pardon) was third under Jose Rocha for owner Luigi Sale and trainer Buckey Stockwell. Raced exclusively at Evergreen Park, the gelding was coming off a victory in an allowance earlier this month.
Gone To Be Bright (Gone To The Mountain- Bright Tarbaby), Always Right (Stel Corona-Hard Lining), JD Wagon Boss (PYC Paint Your Wagon- Elly Mae) and Ali Returns (High Rate Of Return- Alikazam) completed the order of finish.
