More than four months after qualifying for the John Deere Juvenile Challenge at Rillito Park, Charlies Fast Man got to run the stakes final and
win—albeit at a different track. The two-year-old gelding broke his maiden, entered black type, and earned a spot on the Bank of America Challenge Championship card with his 3/4-length victory in the $15,000 John Deere Regional Juvenile Challenge at Ruidoso Downs on July 11.
After breaking from the 3-post, running third at the first call and narrowing the gap to a close second entering the stretch, Charlies Fast Man surged past Jess The Lady during the final yards to win the race.
Trainer Eloy Navarro prepped Charlies Fast Man, who finished the race in :17.793, register- ing an 87 speed index. Jaime Leos did the riding. Owner Jose Mendoza collected a $9,000 payday, which boosted the lifetime bankroll of the young colt to $9,540.
Marshall P. Watson bred Charlies Fast Man out of winner Alltherightcurves. Charlies Fast Man is her first starter.
Jess The Lady (Valiant Hero-Jess Ballin The Jack) finished second in this race for owner Bob McClure. The Harvey Baeza trainee had Paul Nieto in the irons. Shockinglyfamous became a three-time stakes winner with his victorious effort in the $15,000 Bank of America Ruidoso Downs Championship Challenge on July 11.
With prior stakes victories in the SLM Big Daddy Stakes-G3 and last year’s running of the Altoona Derby, Shockinglyfamous came into this race as
the overwhelming favorite. After getting bumped coming out of the 5-post, rider Jimmy Brooks had Shockinglyfamous a close second going into the stretch, then executed a driving finish to reach the finish line with a 1-length margin of victory.
Eddie D. Willis trains Shockinglyfamous, who completed his 440-yard trip in :21.702, register- ing an 88 speed index. The colt also earned a berth in the $300,000 Bank of America Challenge Championship-G1.
The four-year-old bay colt now holds five wins in 18 starts, with the $9,000 payday from this event improving his all-time bankroll to $154,639.
Stone Chase Stables LLC and Alexia Willis co- own the colt, who was bred by Clarence Scharbauer III out of TTA Sales Futurity winner Shocktime TB. She has produced 100% stakes winners from four starters.
