First Kool Moon was the 11-1 underdog, but she shined brightly in the $50,000 Zia Handicap held at Ruidoso Downs on July 30.
Judd Kearl trains First Kool Moon, who broke well from the 2-gate and ran at or near the front for the entirety of the 400 yards. He was second at the first call but by the time he reached the stretch, First Kool Moon had moved into the lead by a head. First Kool Moon held on from there, winning the race by a neck.
Rodrigo Vallejo was aboard for the trip, com- pleted in :20.078 for an 83 speed index.
Jose Luis Ozuna owns First Kool Moon, a 3-year- old gelding who posted his first-ever win in stakes company and his fourth overall victory in 10 starts. Reaching the winner’s circle for the first time in four outs this season, First Kool Moon reaped a $30,000 payday that improved his earnings to $66,155. The gelding previously was stakes-placed, finishing third in the Shue Fly Stakes held this past January at Sunland Park.
Mike Abraham bred First Kool Moon and owns his dam lightly-raced Lilly Cartel. The mare has pro- duced 100% money earners from four starters. First Kool Moon is her first stakes winner and top earner.
Seeyalateralligator (Winners Version-Stars In My Eye) finished second for owners Ezra Elton Lee and Jason Giles. Wes Giles trains the gelding, who had L. Salvador Martinez aboard. Major Bites (Jesse James Jr-Dyna Mo Rime) placed third for owner Israel Bordier and trainer Cynthia Gonzalez. Esgar Ramirez did the riding.

Apollitical Approach, third-fastest qualifier from the July 14 trials, stamped his ticket to this year’s Bank of America Challenge Championships with a victory in the John Deere Ruidoso Juvenile Challenge-G3 at Ruidoso Downs on July 29.
Apollitical Approach’s number was put up after a stewards’ inquiry which resulted in Lethal Eagle being disqualified and placed fourth for bumping Syms TLC after the break.
A homebred racing for George and Peggy Cobb, Apollitical Approach crossed the wire in :18.183, a nose behind Lethal Eagle. Salvador Martinez rode Apollitical Approach for trainer Jose Gonzalez Sr.
In addition to banking the $25,137 winner’s share of the $59,850 purse, Apollitical Approach notched a starting berth in the $130,000 John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship-G2 at Prairie Meadows on Oct. 14. He has won two of his five starts and has earned $31,514.
Apollitical Approach was bred in Oklahoma, and is one of three winners from as many starters pro- duced by Panther Not A Kitty. Graded stakes finalist Valiant Approach is her top earner.

J Running Horses and trainer Tammy Kay Johnson. Louis Howard’s Syms TLC (The Louisiana Cartel- Symphonic) was placed third after the disqualification. G.R. Carter Jr. was up for trainer John Stinebaugh.
Lethal Eagle (One Famous Eagle-Lethal Factor)was DQ’d from 1st to 4th, followed by Runningallnight (Stel Corona-Walking On Sunshine), Capis Chicks A Capo (Capo De Capi- Chase This Chick), Dancing Red Head (Red Storm Cat-Dance Dance), Miss Flyin Jess (Jess Jones-Fly On The Mountain), DQ’d from 5th to 9th was Senator Fast Jack (Louisiana Senator-Shezafasterthanjack), and Patty Del Rey (Mr Jess Perry-Folly Del Rey).

Elicity parlayed a sharp break from post 3 into a wire-to-wire victory in the 440-yard Corona Cartel Stakes at Ruidoso Downs on July 22.
Ridden by Cody Jensen and sent to post at odds of 8-1, Elicity made his 440-yard trip in :21.706, and his winning margin was 1/2-length from Bells Big Hero. Juan Aleman prepped the sorrel daughter of 2010 World Champion Apollitical Jess for owners Audie & Kaye Williams of Papas Place LLC of Silt, Colorado.
Elicity was bred by Robert H. Williams of Vernal, Utah, a longtime horseman whose starters have included 2009 All American Futurity-G1 finalist Jess So Sixy. Elicity is one of two starters produced by Flame N Flash, an 8-year-old daughter of Walk Thru Fire who won three stakes at Los Alamitos from 2011-12, including the 2012 Mildred N. Vessels Memorial Handicap-G1.
Elicity was coming off of a second-place finish, a neck behind Lethal Class, in the 10th of 11 Rainbow Derby-G1 trials on July 9. All told, she has won three of 10 starts, and the $42,000 winner’s share of the $100,000 Corona Cartel Stakes purse pushed the filly’s bankroll to $72,315. She was also 2nd in the 2016 Bobby Angel handicap.
Bells Big Hero (Valiant Hero-Jess Big Time) finished second for owner Gregory Cullum. Agustin Silva rode the stakes-winning gelding for trainer Clint Crawford. Revengerr (First Moonflash-Jess A Cartel) ran third under Esgar Ramirez for owners Tyler Graham and Adame Racing LLC and trainer Toby Keeton.
Eyesa Texan (Valiant Hero-Eyesa Shaker), B D Illusion (Bodacious Dash-Effortless Illusion), Lethal Class (Tres Seis-Miss Lethal), Famously Blue (One Famous Eagle-Run The Dash), Paint My Pilot (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Ms Pilot Point), Beaus Famous (One Famous Eagle-Beaukas) and Wild Mares Milk (Desirio-Kellies Feature) completed the field.
