Rocky Mountain Derby
AIR FORCE WON
by Tracy Gantz
Chris Gandarilla trained half of the qualifiers in the July 9 Rocky Mountain Derby at Arapahoe Park. Three of those runners completed the Trifecta,
as fastest-qualifier Air Force Won came home on top. The gelding is now perfect in three starts at
Arapahoe. He was favored in the Rocky Mountain Derby at 9-10. Dueling with another Gandarilla runner, Unforgiven B, Air Force Won battled that rival through- out most of the 350 yards. Abeachindynasty closed late, and at the wire, a head, a neck, and a head separated
the first four horses, with Air Force Won edging Abeachindynasty in :17.464. Earning the $39,660 first place check boosted the geldings earnings to $70,484.
Ramiro Garcia piloted Air Force Won for Gandarilla and owner Vences Quarter Horse. Air Force Won also captured the Arapahoe Derby Challenge in June.
The Hughes Donaldson Horse Company bred Air Force Won in New Mexico from Forced To Win. The mare has produced four starters, all winners, including stakes-placed Hit With Force and Frost Dalena. The second dam, Tru Force, was multiple stakes-placed.
Alfredo Triana Jr. rode Abeachindynasty (FDD Dynasty-Jess Another Habit) to second for owner Rivera Quarter Horse Racing Inc. The filly has fin- ished first or second in five of her six starts. Unforgiven B (Jumpn-Mr Perrys Effort) ran third for jockey Raul Gutierrez. Armando Venzor Chacon owns the gelding, who broke his maiden at Arapahoe in May.
Completing the field were Three Olives N Smoke (Jess Louisiana Blue-Smokin Corona), Silver Citizen (Silver City TB-Red Alarm), Benefactress (Mr Jess Perry-Dividends Declared), Thatza Fact Jack (Teller Cartel-Alluring Streak), Bachichanator (Carters Cartel-Nine To Midnight TB), Runnin Along (PYC Paint Your Wagon- Think Twice About It) and In The Air Tonight (Carters Cartel-Full Of Air).

SHINER BLOND
by Tracy Gantz
Shiner Blond is well named because she is a clas- sically colored Palomino, with flaxen mane and tail. While she stands out through her color, she also stood out in the July 9 Merial Arapahoe Park Distaff Challenge when she won by daylight.
Betrothen went off as the 7-10 favorite in the Distaff Challenge, with Shiner Blond the fourth choice. Shiner Blond broke third from the outside post under jockey Raul Gutierrez. She moved up solidly to pass rivals and then drew away for a 1 1/4-length victory in :19.870 for the 400 yards. The $12,612 payday boosted Shiner Blond’s total earnings to $25,932.
Zachary Quezada took over the filly’s training at Arapahoe. A & D Racing owns Shiner Blond and bred her in Texas. In her native state, she won once, but the closest she came in stakes was two fourths.
Shiner Blond is out of the Palomino mare Blond Cartel, also campaigned by A & D Racing. Blond Cartel has produced two winners from five starters. The second dam, Pockatus Gold, was a stakes winner.
Keepyourshirton (Foose-Hope To Cope), a $10,000 claim at Los Alamitos in 2014, finished second. Fernando Camacho rode the 4-year-old filly for trainer Robert Otero and owners Raul and Luis Caballero. Keepyourshirton won a claiming race at Sunland Park in March.
Mark Hanson trained Betrothen (Walk Thru Fire-Flo Jo Lady) to third place for his family’s RTM Stables LLC. Eddie Aceves piloted the 5-year-old multiple stakes winner.
Rounding out the field were Swingin Flight (Swingin Jess-Venus Flight), Paula Cruz (Sizzlin Red Corona-KR Laurie Darlin), Ivory Bell (Ivory James-Flash N Meter) and Cover Girl Two (First Moonflash-Chicks A Cover Girl).
Jerry Stojan Memorial
CARAVES WAVES
by John Moorehouse
Caraves Waves added a stakes victory to a solid body of work during his rookie campaign, winning the $22,849 Jerry Stojan Memorial Futurity
by 3/4-length at Evergreen Park in Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada, on July 24.
Home-bred by Shady Lane Stables and Dale Zukowski, Caraves Waves now holds three victories and one second in four starts.
After qualifying fastest for the Jerry Stojan, finishing his 300-yard July 9 trial in :15.769, Caraves Waves was even quicker in the stakes finals. Trained by Randy Cunningham, the 2-year-old gelding broke well from the 6-gate and was running in front by a 1/2-length as Scott Steer steered him into the stretch. None of the other competitors had an answer,
and Caraves Waves dashed to the stakes win and accompanying $10,283 payday, which increased his cumulative earnings to $22,652. Caraves Waves fin- ished the event in :15.740, notching a 93 speed index.
Shady Lane Stables also owns Special Corona, the dam of Caraves Waves. A 2000 mare, Special Corona is stakes-placed herself, finishing second
in the 2003 running of the All Canadian Derby of Alberta. Caraves Waves becomes the third member of the brood to win a stakes race, joining Belladonte and Stella Wave. All three of those stakes winners were sired by Wave Carver.
Sherry Baby (Stel Corona-Velvet Meter) took 2nd by a neck for owner Charles Stojan. William Leech trains the filly, who had Freddy Fuentes up. Buckey Stockwell trains the third-place finisher, Cowboy 109 (Favorite Cartel-Pretty Jet High), who is owned by Stockwell, Bob Perlich, Brian Hinken and Bob McCutcheon. Followed by Tahma Chop (Sztel Corona-Tahma Hawk), Eye On Desirio (Desirio- Dash N Way), Dashin By All (Bodacious Dash-All Lena), Heza Riot (Corona Czech-Platinum N Pearls) and Pink Power (Desirio-Dash The Night Away).
