by Michael Compton
Bye Bye Birdy waved so long to 9 rivals in the $39,150 Merial Canterbury Distaff Challenge at Canterbury Park on July 17 for her first stakes victory. Ridden by Stormy Smith, Bye Bye Birdy
sustained a solid drive from the start, racing in
third position early. She hit the lead in the lane and crossed the finish 1/2-length clear, completing the 400 yards in :19.981 and earning a speed index of 98 for trainer Casey Black.
Owned by Barbara Barley, the sorrel filly increased her bankroll to $85,558. The win also earned her a berth in the Merial Distaff Challenge Championship-G1 at Los Alamitos on Oct. 29.
Bred in Missouri by her owner in partnership with Sharp Farm and S. Burns, Bye Bye Birdy is out of multiple graded stakes-winner Sweet Bye And Bye. An earner of $324,563, the mare is a 4-time stakes winner, including the 1994 Speedhorse Gold & Silver Cup Futurity-RG2. Dash In A Flash Stakes
DIVAS CANDY GIRL
by Tracy Gantz
Though Divas Candy Girl was a longshot in the Dash In A Flash Stakes at Canterbury Park on July 16, she had the credentials to be quick enough out of the gate for a 110-yard race. Her full sister, Champion Spit Curl Diva, set Track Records at distances from 250 yards to 440 yards.
Jockey Brayan Velazquez hustled Divas Candy Girl out of the gate on top, which proved the key to the race. They beat the competition from the begin- ning, and with a race that lasted only :07.105, no one had time to catch them. Capturing the $11,200 win- ners share of the purse boosted Divas Candy Girl’s earnings to $54,887.
Jason Olmstead trains Divas Candy Girl for owner Thomas Scheckel. The three-year-old filly placed in last year’s North Central QHRA Futurity, also at Canterbury.
Divas Candy Girl was bred in Oklahoma by The Estate of Carl Pevehouse and Ezra Lee out of the winning mare Some Kinda Diva. She has produced 100% money earners from seven starters with combined earnings of nearly $1 million. Three-time Champion Spit Curl Diva is her top money earner and a full sibling to Divas Candy Girl. They are her first stakes winners.
Sudden Separation (Inseperable-Okie Dokey Annie) finished second under Stormy Smith. Her connections include owner Duane Murphy and trainer Casey Black. Dash Around Blues (Corona Cartel-Run The Dash) finished third with Erick Cruz in the irons. Kenny Laymon trains the 4-year- old gelding for J K Running Horses LLC.
Completing the field were Ricky Seperate (Inseperable-Quick Meggie), Watch My Wallet Loto (Mr Piloto-Cocopata), Fast Eddys Eyeyinyou (Eye Yin You-Briefcase Cash), and Iowas Texan Tlp (Tempting Dash-Corona Del Rae). Eye Just Speed and Long Gone Kool were scratched.
TQHA Futurity
HERE COMES CALLAN
by Danny Camp
Acounty fair adds to a festive atmosphere. At Gillespie County Fair, the oldest continuous county fair in Texas, it was festive indeed for the $46,100 TQHA Futurity on July 17.
Here Comes Callan was the second fastest quali- fier from the July 3 trials, winning her heat by 1 1/4-lengths.
In the finals, Here Comes Callan stepped away from the 5-post well and quickly took the lead. At the wire she was a head in front. She stopped the clock at :18.181 for the 350-yard race, good for an 83 speed index.
The gray filly now boasts a bankroll worth $19,162 with the addition of $16,135 first place check from the TQHA Futurity. Her race record is two wins from six outs. Here Comes Callan has won her last two outs in a row, both since Arturo Morales has taken over the conditioning and Francisco Calderon has had the riding assignment.
Here Comes Callan is co-owned by trainer Arturo Morales and Ramon Salinas Jr. The filly was bred in Texas by Mary and Jack Evans, Jr. out of winner/Grade 2 stakes placed Evans Express. Here Comes Callan is the first starter out of the mare.
Fastest qualifier Pool Runner (Pool-Cherished Dance) veered out, but got up for 2nd under Eliazar Vera. His connections include owner Eloy R. Garcia & trainer Joel Cantu. Gianni Que (One Famous Gianni- Chalinashake) ran a steady and even race to earn
