AJS HIGH
by Michael Cusortelli
Sent to post as the 3-10 favorite in a field of six, Michael Teel’s homebred AJs High responded with a head victory in the $66,690 Bank of America Canterbury Championship Challenge on July 17.
AJs High covered 440 yards in :21.919 against a reported 24-mph head wind while earning a career-best 103 speed index and his fourth consecutive win. Stormy Smith rode the gelding for trainer Charlton Hunt.
AJs High scored his ninth stakes win in this
event despite pre-race antics, which caused him to unseat Smith prior to loading. “He just threw his head and sat down like a big dog,” Smith said.
All told, AJs High has won 12 of 17 outs, and the $33,345 winner’s share of the Canterbury Challenge purse pushed his bankroll to $496,056. AJs High has won two or more stakes races each year he’s raced, and his five graded stakes wins include this year’s Sooner State Stakes-G1, Eastex Stakes-G2 & Mr Jet Moore Stakes-RG3, as well as the 2014 John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship-G2 and the 2015 Remington Park Oklahoma Bred Derby-RG3.
AJs High was bred by Teel, a resident of Columbia, Missouri. The gelding is one of 11 win- ners from 13 starters out of multiple winner Regally Rare, who is also the dam of stakes winner Struttin High and two additional stakes placed runners.
Thomas Scheckel’s There Goes My Wallet (Mr Piloto-Coronita Cartel), finished second. Roberto Valero rode the Iowa-bred 3-year-old gelding for trainer Kasey Willis.
Famous Bank (One Famous Eagle-Shake The Bank) completed the trifecta. Cesar Esqueda rode the 4-year-old stallion for owner Rodolfo Rodriguez and trainer Saul Perez.
