Bradford Stakes
PARTI FAVOR
by Michael Compton
The connections of four-year-old gelding Parti Favor had reason to celebrate as he dispatched nine rivals to win the 400-yard $40,000 Bradford Stakes at Indiana Grand to earn his first black-type victory on July 9.
Ridden by Rolando Pina, Parti Favor took advantage of a quick start, breaking from the outside post on top, to open 2-lengths on the field away from the gate. In command throughout the race and never headed, Parti Favor bounded to the finish a clear winner, defeating runner-up Pistolpacking Pepsi by
1 3/4-lengths. Sent off as the favorite, Parti Favor stepped distance in a lively :19.600, earning a speed index of 102 for owner/trainer Joe M. Davis.
The $22,000 winner’s share increased Parti Favor’s lifetime bankroll to $104,787 and improved his slate to 18-6(1)-2(1)-5(3). The gelding is a multi- ple stakes finalist who earlier this year set a 400-yard New Track Record in :19.467 at Indiana Grand.
Bred in Oklahoma by Jessie Miles, Party Favor is the only foal out of the stakes winner Funparty.
Pistolpacking Pepsi (Jesse James Jr-Wave of Pepsi) chased the winner gate to wire under Jose Beltran and held the place spot for owners Robert Ray and Ronald Brown. Brown also trains the gelding. After the disqualification of Stinkin Rich, WH Design
by Dash (Brimmstone-Fast Mans Dash), ridden by Harold Collins, was elevated to the show spot. The 4-year-old gelding is owned by Carolyn Bruce and trained by Matt Frazier. Followed by Rock Crushin Dynasty (FDD Dynasty-Saratoga Jo), A Tempting Task (Tempting Dash-Ima Perry), HF Dashin Jojo (Dashin Bye-Mary Jo Mito), Finche (Tres Seis-Doctor Prospector), Tinys First Pepsi (Tinys First Corona- Chics Pepsi), Style On Speed Dial (Ivory James-Pat B Stylin) & DQ’d from 3rd to last Stinkin Rich (One Famous Eagle-Miss Scarlet). Abundaz, Roger More, Soraya Seis & String Bet were scratched.
Indiana Grand QHRAI Derby
CAPTAIN BD
by Michael Compton
Jockey Jose Davila popped out of the gate on
top with Captain BD at the start of the Indiana Grand QHRAI Derby on July 9 and never looked back. The pair immediately put 2-lengths on the field at the first call and rolled to the finish an
easy winner. The official margin of victory was
1 1/4-lengths for Captain BD, who required just :19.587 to complete the 400 yards. The final time, just ticks off of Parti Favor’s track record of :19.467 set in June of this year, earned a speed index of 103. It was the first stakes win for Captain BD, who is owned by David Gonzalez and trained by Victor Gonzalez. The $40,480 winner’s share of the purse increased Captain BD’s earnings to $66,560 and improved his record to 10-3(1)-2-2. The gelding set a Hialeah Park New Track Record, breaking his maiden at 220-yards.
Bred in California by Bruce and Jill Thompson, Captain BD is out of graded stakes-placed Brazalian Dasher, dam of eight starters with over $1.6 million in combined earnings including 2015 Champion 3-Year-Old Colt Apollitical Blood.
TF Jess A Leader (Mr Jess Perry-TF Ms Special Perry) gained ground late and finished second under Jose Beltran for owner Jose M. Chavez and trainer Sacramento Chavez.
Beyondthegamewagon (PYC Paint Your Wagon- Beyondthegame) showed late interest for Stanley Jackson and finished third for owner Kris Locklear and trainer Randy Smith.
WRS Quick Eagle (One Famous Eagle-WRS Quick Sister), Shyne On (American Runaway-Shiney Copy), The Charmed Ruler (Favorite Cartel- Features Lucky Charm), BP Tres Seis Policy (Tres Seis-CC Policy), Mr Fool Me Twice (Escondido Beach-Foolininthemeadow TB), Who Jack (Jumps- Paradise Jayne) and Waves Copilot (Mr Piloto-One More Wave) followed.
King William Handicap
RED CORONA WARRIOR
by Danny Camp
Trainer Josue Ponce took over the conditioning of Red Corona Warrior before the spring. Previously, the gelding had two wins from 15 starts. Since then, Red Corona Warrior has run one second and won his last two in a row. That makes a record of four wins out of 17 races, including his latest victory in the 350-yard $20,000 King William Handicap at Retama Park on July 9. Ponce has certainly done his homework.
In spite of a steady head wind, Red Corona Warrior ran a time of :17.918 in the contest, earning a speed index of 92. The 4-year-old gelding and rider Ignacio Bustamante broke from the 6-post tardy,
but Bustamante let his mount gather and straighten himself. They picked up speed and flew across the line a nose in front. The $12,200 winner’s share boosts his total earnings to $132,829 for owner Almada Racing.
Red Corona Warrior was bred in Texas by the Terrazas Family out of unraced Prairie War Princess. The mare has produced two money earners from three starters. Red Corona Warrior, her top earner, also won this year’s Texas Twister Stakes, finished second in two additional stakes and third in another.
Snipes And Bites (Vrrroom-BR Corona Sensation) had the early lead but was only able to hold on to second. His connections include owner Pete A. Scarmardo and trainer Brian Stroud. Luis Vivanco was in the saddle. A Kool Secret (No Secrets Here-A Kool Zoom) had a little trouble at the start, but was able to overcome adversity to finish in third place for owner Cynthia Cruz, Norma L. Guerrero and Adame Racing, LLC, and trainer Manuel Roman. Luciano Duenez was in the saddle.
Followed by Marys Coronitas (Corona Cartel- Inbetween Dances), Ashotofliquidcourage (Captain Courage-Linda Laveaux), Time For Wine (Mr Jess Perry-Fine Wines) and My Ivory Tower (Ivory James- All About Ease). Pursuit Of Duty scratched.
