JETSIECARTEL
by Michael Compton
Jetsie Cartel rode a strong late surge to win the $15,000 La Villita Stakes at Retama Park on July 23. In the process, she notched her first career stakes victory for owner-breeder Eleazar Martinez, Sr. and trainer Roberto Madrigal.
Racing in mid-pack for jockey Claudio Aguilar early, the bay filly hit her best stride in the lane and, in a driving finish, beat a fast-closing DM Maryanna by 3/4-length at the finish.
Sent away as the race favorite, Jetise Cartel clocked the 330 yards in :17.381, earning a speed index of 86.
The $8,550 winner’s share of the purse increased the three-year-old filly’s bankroll to $19,626, and the win improved her overall record to 7-4(1)-0-0.
A Texas homebred, Jetsie Cartel is produced from the winning mare, Jetsie Shine First, which Martinez also owns. She has produced 100% money/ ROM earners from three starters, including stakes- placed Real Bad Jetsie.
Runner-up DM Maryanna (The Louisiana Cartel-Mary La Jolla) raced toward the rear of the field in the early stages and flew late in the stretch to finish second under Juan Garcia, Jr. The brown filly is owned by Donna Mushinski and trained by Kie Mushinski.
Dee Dee Do Run Run (Ivory James-Runaway Dee Dee) dueled throughout and finished a game third under Francisco Calderon. The gray filly is owned and trained by Jorge Haddad.
I Sa Chick (Chicks Regard-First Place
Eyesa), Greystone Girl (FDD Dynasty-Sheza Libituino), Get Inda Pool (Pool-Ima Inda Mood), Dashinthruatrain (Freighttrain B-Breakfast On Me), Kittyna (The Louisiana Cartel-Las Alamitos) and JA Sweet Reason (Executive Menace-Sticky N Picky) completed the order of finish.
Jack Clifford Stakes Zoetis ALB Distance Challenge
SNOWYCORONITAS STREAKINZOOMER
  by John Moorehouse
Snowy Coronitas never had made an official start prior to the Jack Clifford Stakes. Not only did the four-year-old gelding win the $15,550 race, he did so in dominant fashion, going wire-to-wire and sport- ing a 1 3/4-length margin of victory in the July 23 event held at the California State Fair in Sacramento. There was no catching up to this gelding trained by Mario Loza. He broke on top from the 10-gate, led by a head at the first call and widened his advan- tage at every remaining juncture. Snowy Coronitas enjoyed a 1 1/2-length lead entering the stretch, and from there he cruised to the line.
Irving Orozco drew the riding assignment on Snowy Coronitas’ maiden out, a 350-yard trip that was completed in :17.672 for a 102 speed index.
Owned by Cuadra Mariscal and bred by Luis Mariscal, Snowy Coronitas had the bloodlines that suggested success. Luis Mariscal also owns his dam Snowy Memory, a 2002 mare who has 4 offspring,
3 of whom now have made starts. Snowy Coronitas became the 2nd offspring out of his dam to win a stakes event. His half-brother, Snowy Gaddafy, actu- ally won last year’s version of this race.
Eddies Jazzin (TR Dasher-Jazzin Mandi), a 32-1 longshot, surprised in second place for owner Maria Corina Rodriguez and trainer Humberto Loma. Kevin Orozco did the riding. Ivys Storm (Red Storm Cat-Whats Jody) hit the board in third for Jorge Moya. The Ricardo Guillen trainee had Martin Arriaga up.
The remaining order of finish was Rarely Occurs (Stel Corona-Seldom Happens), No Mas Vaquero (Volcom-Queiro Mas), Hot Shot (Walk Thru Fire-Girl Secrets), Outdashn (Check Him Out- Dashnlitia), Tio Pepe Balvoa (Balboa Bay-Nohemi Sioux), Kotur (Good Reason Sa-Make A Run), Dashett (TR Dasher-Future Mother) and One More Fire (Walk Thru Fire-Apollos Favorite).
