seventh fastest in winning his trial and went off at 8-1.
In the final, A Pollitical Candy V was in a little tight when the horses on either side of him closed in a bit at the break. But he quickly overcame that and headed for the wire. Meanwhile, KJ Desparado broke on top from post 9. Under a right-handed whip KJ Desparado moved closer to A Pollitical Candy V, and those two battled for the wire. A Pollitical Candy V edged KJ Desparado by a neck for the victory, completing 440 yards in :21.137.
“I knew that was the fastest 3 year old in the country right next to me,” said Pulido. “My horse beared down, and I knew at the finish line that we had won—that’s when my hand went up in the air.”
There was a trainer’s objection against KJ Desparado by Xavier Rodriguez, who conditions fourth-place finisher Favorite Blues Man. The stewards ruled that there would be no change.
Stacy, who trains under the name of Stacy Charette-Hill, bred A Pollitical Candy V in California from winner Rock Candy SA with her husband, who died in 2021. She credits Randy with much of their breeding operation and notes how instrumental he was in the development
of the good racehorse and sire PYC Paint Your Wagon. Randy was the stallion’s breeding manager, and Michael Pohl bred and raced him.
“Michael Pohl and Randy bought the mare from a gentleman in Indiana,” said Stacy. “We ran her a little bit, and then we bred her. Then Sammy purchased the mare privately—he bought a bunch of mares from us. My husband and Sammy were friends and did a lot of foal-sharing together.”
Part of that deal included the embryo a recipient mare was carrying who became A Pollitical Candy V.
Rock Candy SA is having a terrific year. Overall, she has produced five winners in eight starters, including 2022 Horseshoe Indianapolis QHRAI Derby Rock Candy Blue and 2022 Ruidoso Juvenile Invitational Stakes winner Rock A Jess V. The second dam, 1996 Remington Futurity-G1 winner Send Me The Candy, is the dam of four stakes winners.
KJ Desparado (Apollitical Jess-Tres Veses), owned by John and Kathy Lee and Ruben Mares and bred in the name of the Lees’ L&L Land
& Cattle, finished second. Adrian Ramos rode the gelding for trainer Wesley Giles. In addition to the Ruidoso Futurity, KJ Desparado won
the 2021 All American Futurity-G1 and Texas
Classic Futurity-G1. Noe Garcia Jr. piloted Lethal Avenger (Volcom-Lethal Class) to third for trainer Fred Danley and owners J & SM Inc. and Don and M. Lane Reynolds. Lethal Avenger won this year’s West Texas Derby-G3 and last year’s La Fiesta Futurity.
