“I think this filly is Beth’s alter ego because she is the sweetest thing in the barn you have ever seen,” Judy said. “She is an absolute lovebug. But when she gets on the track, she can be a little bit Miss Beth Dutton.”
That toughness came in handy for the July 23 Rainbow Oaks at Ruidoso Downs. With James Flores aboard for the first time and breaking from the outside, Miss Beth Dutton, the 8-1 fourth choice, got away
a step slowly. But she rallied quickly and battled to the wire with favored Kiss The Cartel, another daughter of Kiss My Hocks. Miss Beth Dutton beat Kiss The Cartel by a neck in :21.554 for 440 yards.
“We knew that filly that ran second was very nice,” said Conda, “and we just thought Miss Beth Dutton ran an exceptional race. Four-forty is her distance. She caught them at the wire, and that’s what mattered.”
Clinton Crawford trains Miss Beth Dutton for the Mazes. The filly became a stakes winner last year with a victory in the Rainbow Juvenile Stakes.
“We owe so much of our success to our trainers, Clint and Renee (Wilson),” said Conda.
Crawford and Wilson found Miss Beth Dutton for the owners in 2020, when the pandemic forced the moving of the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale to the Lazy E Ranch
in Oklahoma. The Mazes were unable to attend that sale.
“The only stipulation we put on them is we said we’d really like to run a Kiss My Hocks,” said Judy. “Would you go find us a good Kiss My Hocks? Clint called and said, ‘I found the best Kiss My Hocks at the sale, and it’s a filly.’ We looked at pictures of her, and Clint bought her for us.”
The filly, sold by breeder Paragon Farms LLC, cost $33,000, a veritable bargain, given
that she has now earned $230,304 and has plenty of potential.
With her name, Miss Beth Dutton already has amassed fans from the television series.
She has another one, Dr. Jan Parker, whom the Mazes consider an honorary owner. A longtime friend and a retired professor from Texas Tech University, Dr. Parker attends the races when possible and can be seen in many winner’s circle photos.
“She’s Miss Beth Dutton’s biggest fan,” said Judy.
“If we get a trophy or a buckle or a photo, she gets one right there along with us—we order extra,” said Conda.
Paragon Farms bred Miss Beth Dutton in Texas out of Time For Jess, whose three stakes victories included the 2017 Mildred N. Vessels Memorial Handicap-G1. Time For Jess has produced two starters, both winners. She is a full sister to stakes-placed AJs On Time and a
half-sister to stakes-placed Toms Big Time Girl and Morgan Gale.
Second-place Kiss The Cartel (Kiss My Hocks-A Snowy Cartel) races for Lonnie and Kody Horwood. Ricky Ramirez rode her for trainer Trey Wood. Kiss The Cartel finished third in this year’s Ruidoso Derby-G1.
Christian Ramos rode Vytaliti (Mr Jess Perry-Zenergy) to third for owner Victor Diaz and trainer Martin Orona Jr. Vytaliti is an allowance winner at Sunland Park.
Followed by Sassalitical (Apollitical Jess-Jess Sass Me), Lil Bit A Candy (Jess Good Candy-Rustys Lil Lady), Sunshine Nmy Pocket (Hes Relentless-PYC First Prize Fany), Jess Dream Of Me (Apollitical Jess-Valiant Jess), Koalition (Apollitical Jess-Nellie Delaney), Candy Going Grand (FDD Going Grand-Jess Send Me Candy), and Shesa Relentless Gal (Hes Relentless-A Snowy Cartel).
