BLACK BLOOD
Cby Tracy Gantz
lose in two previous stakes, Black Blood nabbed
a stakes win of his own in the $32,400 Develop A Plan Stakes-G3 at Delta Downs on July 8.
Black Blood had a trouble-free trip in the 350- yard stakes event. He came away on top from the gate under jockey Gilbert Ortiz and powered home in a wire-to-wire run by 1-length in :17.444 as the 17-10 second choice, posting a 94 speed index. The $21,000 winner’s share take his earnings to $166,308.
Michael Zingelmann trains Black Blood for owner Rayne Knight. At the 2019 Louisiana Quarter Horse Breeders Association Yearling Sale, Knight purchased Black Blood for $19,000 from Spring Hill Farm. Black Blood finished third in the 2021 Delta Downs Louisiana Bred Derby-RG3 and LQHBA Breeders Derby-RG3.
Erin Chrisman bred Black Blood in Louisiana out of Black Rosalita, who won the 2012 Charlie Claborn Memorial and Black Gold Derby (setting a New Track Record) and the 2013 Juno’s Request Stakes-G2 and Decketta Stakes-G3. DANJER

fter Lynnder 16 and Jess Rocket Man broke
Canterbury Park Track Records for 400
yards and 350 yards, respectively, it might have seemed that the final race on the card wouldn’t result in another record broken. But Danjer came through once again, with both the victory and a New Track Record in the $52,360 Bank of America Canterbury Park Championship Challenge-G3 at Canterbury Park on July 14.
It was apparent from the very beginning that Danjer and jockey Cody Smith would win. The only questions were by how much and in what time. Danjer destroyed the field by 2 1/2-lengths, completing 440 yards in :21.070 for a 119 speed index, breaking the previous Track Record of :21.162 set by Jess A Runner in 2011.
Dean Frey trains Danjer, and he owns the 6-year-old gelding with Downtime Enterprises LLC and Billy Smith. Danjer, the 2021 World Champion, has now won 12 stakes, earned $1,693,040, and
has been voted for four other Championships. Frey bred Danjer in Oklahoma out of his homebred graded stakes winner Shez Jess Toxic. The mare has produced four winners from six starters.
Jason Olmstead trains second-place Juice Is Loose (One Famous Eagle-Miss Southern DD), ridden by Edwin Escobedo, and third-place Apollitical Hero (Apollitical Jess-Belle Of Valor), ridden by Luis Valenzuela. Tom Maher owns Juice Is Loose with Stephen Williams and Apollitical Hero with Paul Luedemann and Richard Tobin. Juice Is Loose won the 2021 Two Rivers Stakes-G3 and Skip Zimmerman Memorial Stakes. Apollitical Hero has placed in two other stakes.
CR Apollitical Joe (Apollitical Jess-LW Evening Lajolla) and Fly The Coup (Favorite Cartel-Babe On The Fly) finished fourth and fifth, completing the order of finish.
Bob Morehouse Stakes
JESS ROCKET MAN
Tby Tracy Gantz
rainer Jason Olmstead had the $39,200 Bob
Morehouse Stakes at Canterbury Park on July 14 surrounded with four of the six horses in the field. He hit the Trifecta, as Jess Rocket Man defeated stablemates Dickey Bob and The Minnesota Moon.
When the gate opened, Jess Rocket Man veered inward slightly, bumping with Dickey Bob. But jockey Luis Valenzuela quickly straightened out Jess Rocket Man, who caught Dickey Bob at the very last moment to nip that rival by a slim nose. Posting a 108 speed index, Jess Rocket Man’s time of :17.353 for 350 yards set a New Track Record, beating
the old mark of :17.360 set by California Blossom in 2019. The $19,600 winner’s share of the purse brought his earnings to $130,992.
Olmstead trains Jess Rocket Man and Dickey Bob for Lunderborg LLC, which bred the full brothers in Minnesota. Jess Rocket Man won the North Star State Derby and Minnesota Quarter Horse Derby last year.
Jess Rocket Man and Dickey Bob are out of Paint Or More, who captured the 2011 North Central QHRA Futurity for Lunderborg. They are both
by Apollitical Jess. Paint Or More has produced
five starters, all winners, including multiple stakes winner PYC Jess Bite Mydust.
Second-place Dickey Bob (Apollitical Jess-Paint Or More), ridden by Edwin Escobedo, is one of Paint Or More’s winners. The 7-year-old gelding has won 11 stakes and placed in five others.
Summer Run Inc.’s homebred The Minnesota Moon (Moonin The Eagle-Etta Betta Zoom) finished third for trainer Jason Olmstead under jockey Gonzalo Gutierrez. The 3-year-old gelding finished third in last year’s Minnesota Quarter Horse Futurity.
Rounding out the field were Western Reserve (Im A Fancy PYC-Western Fun), Relentless Babe (Hes Relentless-Mai Corona), and Myownersbroke (BP Phoenix Reign-Hit The Throtle).
