LYNNDER 16
Wby Tracy Gantz
hen Tom Maher and Richard Tobin bought
Lynnder 16 as a short yearling for $31,000
at the 2017 Heritage Place Winter Mixed Sale, they didn’t realize what a bargain they were getting. Nine stakes wins later, Lynnder 16 has earned $797,252, most recently capturing the $39,270 Q-Racing Video Canterbury Park Distaff Challenge-G3 at Canterbury Park on July 14.
Lynnder 16 responded to jockey Edwin Escobedo’s urging to overhaul the early leaders, getting up for
a neck victory. She completed 400 yards in :19.560, earning a 105 speed index and setting a New Track Record, breaking the old mark of :19.583 set in 2014 by Send Me This Wagon.
Jason Olmstead, who gave Lynnder 16 her first lessons, trains the mare for Maher and Tobin. Lynnder 16’s nine stakes include the 2020 AQHA Distaff Challenge Championship Stakes-G1 and the 2018 Remington Park Oklahoma Bred Futurity-RG2.
James and Marilyn Helzer bred Lynnder 16 in Oklahoma out of deceased Tinys Corona Queen. The mare has produced 14 winners in 16 starters, including five other stakes winners. One of those, Reacher 16, has won six stakes in Mexico.
Olmstead also trains second-place Apollitical Mogul (Apollitical Jess-Cash Cartel), and Maher is that 6-year-old mare’s sole owner. Luis Valenzuela piloted Apollitical Mogul. Bonifacio Quiroz rode FDD Princess (FDD Dynasty-Viborita) to third for owner Thomas Scheckel and trainer Shawna Manriquez.
Completing the field were Apollitical J Julia (Apollitical Jess-Julias Perfection), Chequer Out (Dominyun-Check N Fetch), Valiant Miss Priss (Valiant Hero-Corona Mit Go), Apocalyptical Sis (Apollitical Jess-CC Seis), Dugan Chapel Baby (Hes Relentless-PYC Pick Your Pocket), Maudest Maven (Apollitical Jess-Madresita), and Javelina Cantina (Foose-Little Talks).

COLD BREWSTER

ven before the $25,432 AQHA Canterbury
Park Distance Challenge at Canterbury Park
on July 14, Cold Brewster has been a good claim. The 5-year-old gelding won back-to-back races at Remington Park this past spring and became a stakes winner in the Canterbury Distance Challenge.
When the gate opened, High On America went to the front, joined by Fastest Leader on the inside. Cold Brewster, ridden by Gonzalo Gutierrez, raced in third, in a good spot to challenge on the turn. However, he ended up having to race extremely wide, getting up in the final strides to win by 1-length in :46.414, posting a 90 speed index. The $12,716 winner’s share of the purse brought his bankroll to $121,043.
Durk Peery trains Cold Brewster for owner Austin Watterson. They claimed him for $12,500 in April 2021 at Remington Park. In his third start for his new connections, Cold Brewster ran third in the 2021 edition of this race
Dustin Cox, from whom Watterson claimed Cold Brewster, bred the gelding in Oklahoma out
of the Thoroughbred mare Crescent Shore. The mare is a daughter of Irish-bred millionaire Aragorn, who ran second in the 2006 NetJets Breeders’ Cup Mile-G1 on the grass. Crescent Shore has produced three starters, all winners and all Quarter Horses.
Full brothers Faster Than Hasta (Hasta Be Fast- Leadmetoyourladder) and Fastest Leader (Hasta Be Fast-Leadmetoyourladder) finished second and third, both trained by Robert Johnson. Stormy Smith rode Faster Than Hasta, who is owned by the estate of John G. Johnson and is a six-time stakes winner. David Pinon rode Fastest Leader, who is owned by Deanna Anderson and was placing in his first stakes.
Completing the field were High On America (High Rate Of Return-Tellin It All), Jess Up V (Jess Lips-Act Up), and Lota Looking PYC (Lota PYC- Devilish Look-TB).
Keokuk Stakes-G3
JESS ROCKET MAN
Jby John Moorehouse
ess Rocket Man added a fourth stakes win to his
career record on July 22, capturing the $32,900 Keokuk Stakes-G3 at Prairie Meadows.
To no great surprise, Jess Rocket Man was the post-time favorite given his previous stakes victories. He broke on top from the No. 3 gate, yielded the advantage to One Kool Dreamer, then got back in front and pulled away from any competitors, enjoying a separation of 1 1/2-lengths as he reached the finish line.
Jason Olmstead trains Jess Rocket Man, who covered the 350 yards in :17.641 and registered a 94 speed index while tallying his first graded stakes victory under Stormy Smith. The $18,900 winner’s share of the purse improved his total bankroll to $149,892.
Lunderborg LLC owns and bred Jess Rocket Man, whose previous stakes successes include last year’s versions of the North Star State Derby and Minnesota Derby. He’s logged three straight wins—two in stakes company—taking the Bob Morehouse Stakes in his last out before the Keokuk.
Bruce and Judy Lunderborg bred Jess Rocket Man out of Paint Or More, a 2009 mare whom they also own. Paint Or More also is a former stakes winner, taking first in the 2011 running of the North Central QHRA Futurity at Canterbury. Paint Or More’s brood includes two other stakes winners, both full brothers: PYC Jess Bite Mydust and Dickey Bob.
Only four horses competed in the race, three
of them coming out of Olmstead’s barn. Olmstead trains One Kool Dreamer (Hes Relentless-One
Kool Wagon), who finished second under Edwin Escobedo for owner Brenda Reiswig. Stacy Charette-Hill trains third-place finisher Damn Strait (Dominyun-Hottesticketintown), who is owned by M.C. Stucks. Cristian Esqueda was aboard.
Apollitical Hero (Apollitical Jess-Belle of Valor) completed the field. Apollitical Mogul and Dickey Bob both were scratched.
