With regular rider Rodrigo Aceves aboard, Sudden Thoughts finished second in the 26th trial to post the 10th-fastest qualifying time of :21.404.
Race Record: 3-2-1-0
Sudden Thoughts faced his first defeat in the All American Futurity trials, but the gelding’s second- place finish was still good enough to earn him a
spot in the finals with
the 10th-fastest time of :21.404. Ironically, Sudden Thoughts’ two previous
wins were in futurity trials, with neither resulting in a trip to the finals. Trained by Eduardo Gonzalez and ridden by Rodrigo Aceves, Sudden Thoughts is owned by Anwar Elias-Ortiz’s 21 Partnership of El Paso, Texas. They paid $14,000 for the gelding at the 2011 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale, where he was consigned by Rafter W Stables. Jim Pitts bred the gelding, who is by Wave Carver and is the first winner from two starters for the Corona Cartel mare Cee Cee Otoole. A Grade 1 finalist, Cee Cee Otoole is a half-sister to Champion and 2000 All American Futurity winner Eyesa Special and to graded stakes winner Jessie O Toole. His second dam is the winning Special Effort mare Miss O Toole, who has produced six winners from 14 starters and the earners of $1,569,354.

all american Derby
ten trials to the All American Derby-G1 were held
on Friday, Aug. 17, at Ruidoso Downs. As nice as
the weather was the previous day for the All American Futurity-G1 trials, it turned nasty for the Derby trials, dumping rain on the track for the better part of the day. Seven of the 10 qualifiers came from the first three trials, with the rain starting just as the third trial got underway. No horses qualified from trials four through six, with one qualifier each coming from trials seven, eight and nine.
When the finals run on Sunday, Sept. 2, it will be the 39th running of the All American Derby. This year’s purse of $2,234,539 sets a new record for the Derby, breaking the previous record of $1,548,685 set in 2010. The winner will receive $938,506. The All American Derby is the richest derby in Quarter Horse racing, and the richest race for 3-year-old or older horses in Quarter Horse racing. The winner also receives an invitation to the Grade 1, $750,000 Champion of Champions, to be run at Los Alamitos Race Course in Cypress, California in December.
