les bois Derby
JuMPn black FlasH
by Tracy Gantz
Jumpn Black Flash has thrived this summer. Since Memorial Day, the gelding hasn’t put a foot wrong, racking up five consecutive victories. His most recent win came on Aug. 10 in the Les Bois Derby.
He began the skein at Les Bois Park, where he had won last year’s Knight Transportation Futurity after finishing third in his trial, his only loss at Les Bois. After an allowance victory there this year, Jumpn Black Flash captured two races at the Jerome Fair before returning to Les Bois to post the fastest qualifying time for the Les Bois Derby.
Robert Webb has partnered Jumpn Black Flash in all of his 2012 victories, and the rider was aboard for the final. They broke on top from post three and barely broke a sweat, as Jumpn Black Flash came home an easy half-length winner. He covered the 400 yards in :19.975 as the 7-5 favorite.
Lisa Anderson owns and bred Jumpn Black Flash in Washington, and L. Uriel Arreola trains the geld- ing. Jumpn Black Flash is the first foal out of winner Stuckonafeeling, who has since produced one other starter and winner, 2-year-old Feeling The Jump.
Robert Gutke’s homebred Aguascalientes (Tres Seis-Marmalade Lady) finished second for jockey Dirk Crane and trainer Jay Pitcher. Aguascalientes was coming off two allowance wins.
Robert Burney piloted Royal Quick Lad (Royal Quick Dash-Shamless Lass) to third. Kenneth and Barbara Hammon own and bred the colt, and Rodney Hyde trains him. A two-time winner, Royal Quick Lad was third to Jumpn Black Flash in their trial.
Completing the field were Reggies Zoom (Shazoom-Dolls Black Type), Pedal To The Medal (Mighty Invictus-That Be Me), Kool Tobeme (Dashin Bye-Kool K.J.-TB), Rare Wave (Wave Carver-Rare Encore), Smart Little Venus (Ivory James-Smart Little Liz), and Leavingthescene JMB (Proudest Effort- Carries Dreams). Traceys Saint Ann was scratched.
Idaho cup Derby
RTM PHIlbIn RD
by John Moorehouse
RTM Philbin Rd posted the second-fastest qualify- ing time for the Idaho Cup Derby. When it came time for the finals, however, the gelding had no equal.
RTM Philbin Rd covered the 400 yards in :19.571 to win the $15,000 derby on Aug. 11 at Les Bois Park. In the process, Susan and Theresa Hanson’s homebred gelding collected his second win in six outs.
The win shouldn’t have come as a complete surprise. RTM Philbin Rd clocked a 106 index during the trials, where he finished second to top qualifier Ive Been Special Too, who was scratched from the finals. With that rival out of the picture, RTM Philbin Rd dominated the Idaho Cup Derby, making a sharp break from the outside of the nine- horse field, opening up a quick half-length lead and expanding his advantage with every stride to coast across the line 1 3/4 lengths in front.
Mark Hanson trains RTM Philbin Rd, and Alan Corson drew the riding assignment. The victory produced a $6,000 payout for the 3-year-old gelding, elevating his lifetime earnings to $11,446.
RTM Philbin Rd is the first stakes winner from two foals for his dam, the stakes-placed track record setting mare Streakin Mirage.
Heza Beer Man (Corona For Me-Sheza Gator) ran second at every call for owner Vicente Treyes and trainer Jarrett Mills. Dirk Crane drew the riding assignment. Dan Moon owns Wayward Wings (Hadtobenuts- Chickadown Azure), who hit the board in third. The Bret Vickery trainee had Joe Crispin aboard.
The remaining order of finish was Okey Dokey Legend (Okey Dokey Dale-Last Penny TB), Java Jumpn (Jumpn-Shez Changing Ways), Poem Without Words (SC Chiseled In Stone-Georgias Majorette),
La Choriada (Dale Badon-DSW Kokopelli), Feature Miss Fame (Feature Mr Jess-Go For Fame) and MVR Cheeky Cartel (Phoebes Cartel-CH Cheek Too Cheek). Ive Been Special Too was scratched.
Harvest cup P&a Futurity
azuRes VIsIon
by Tracy Gantz
The Paint colt Azures Vision was following a family tradition by running in the Harvest Cup Paint and Appaloosa Futurity. His dam finished fourth
in the 1994 running of the race, and he followed his half-brother Azures Meteor as the second winner, capturing the Aug. 11 event at Arapahoe Park.
When the gate opened, the three horses outside of Azures Vision bumped slightly. Jockey Fernando Rojas avoided the trouble with Azures Vision, who quickly took command. Approaching the wire of the 350-yard Harvest Cup, Rureadyforme-APHA surged forward. But the filly was unable to catch Azures Vision, who won by a half-length in :18.201 as the 9-10 favorite.
Azures Vision has a perfect two-for-two record, even more impressive since both starts have come in stakes. He debuted by winning the Western States Paint and Appaloosa Futurity, also at Arapahoe. Manuel Orozco trains Azures Vision for owner Jesus Guerrero.
John and Neva Downing’s The Painted Pitchfork bred Azures Vision in Colorado from winner Azure Treasure. The Paint mare’s three winners from eight starters have each won stakes.
Four Cross Horse Co.’s homebred Rureadyforme (Midnight Corona-Youbetterbeready) won her first two races. Leroy Coombs trains her, and Vince Guerra rode her to second in the Harvest Cup.
Cool Deception-ApHC (Hotdoggin-Shes Cool) fin- ished third under Russell Vicchrilli. Owned by Christie Weeder and trained by Tim Weeder, the Appaloosa filly also finished third in the Western States.
Completing the field were Manygreycolors- APHA (A Crack Shot-Indian Wine), Ima Dancin Bee-APHA (Dos Poruno-Bettors Rascal), Yovanies Gold-APHA (Agolden Boy Audition-Placida), Pams Purple Door-APHA (Dos Poruno-Two Cents Worth), and Dont Tell-APHA (Chasin The Money- Streakin Squaw). Lajolla Summer-APHA and Nike Treasure-APHA were scratched.
