Rocky Mountain Derby
CAPTAIN FORCE
by Tracy Gantz
Alittle layoff from his freshman year to his sophomore year didn’t stop Captain Force from picking up right where he left off in 2017. The sorrel colt finished last year by winning the Black Gold 440 Championship Futurity-RG3 at Will Rogers Downs and then he added the $63,364 Rocky Mountain Derby this year at Arapahoe Park on June 16.
Captain Force was the fastest qualifier to the Rocky Mountain Derby, winning his June 1 trial wire- to-wire. Under Edwuin Lujan once again, Captain Force broke from the 1-post in third in the finals and quickly grabbed the lead in the stretch. He drifted out, but proved best by a 1/2-length, stopping the clock in :17.820 for an 88 speed index. The colt brought home the $25,346 winner’s share of the purse for owner Pedro Andazola and trainer Hipolito Michel-Valverde, boosting his total lifetime earnings to $112,778.
Gentry Farms bred Captain Force out of two- time Champion Deelish, dam of 10 winners from 19 starters, including top earner and 2-time stakes winner Deeheiress. Captain Force is the third stakes winner of the brood.
Dominate This (Dominyun-Valiant Red Vixen) finished second under jockey Mark Jasso for owner Angel Villalobos-Hernandez and trainer Lorenzo Campuzano. Michel-Valverde also trains third-place DG Tempter (Tempting Dash-DG Miss Daisy) who is owned by D/G Ranch LLC and ridden by Jose Alvarez. Shinning Bianca (One Handsome Man-Seis Star Glitter) and Bringonthewave (Wave Carver-Special Corona) dead-heated for fourth, but Bringonthewave was disqualified and placed ninth. That moved Just Chic It (Jumpn Chic-Dashin
Big Time) to fifth, followed by Thorium (Captain Courage-Blaze The Mall) and Dee Favorite Girl (Favorite Cartel-Eyema Blues Girl). Mighty Men Of Valor (No Secrets Here-Royally Streak) lost the rider and walked off. Icy Devon was scratched.
American Flyer Stakes
IBA JP
by Michael Compton
Veteran campaigner IBA JP scored the first stakes victory of his career on June 10, taking the $15,000 American Flyer Stakes at Arapahoe Park.
An eight-year-old sorrel gelding, IBA JP had been racing mostly in claiming and allowance races three years ago. Following a hiatus in which he did not start in 2016, he returned in 2017 to cross the finish line in second in the American Flyer Stakes only to be disqualified and placed fourth.
Vindicating last year’s loss, IBA JP and jockey Manuel Meza broke best in the 350-yard dash and assumed command of the 6-horse field early in this year’s renewal. IBA JP was determined through the lane and scored the 10-1 upset over race favorite Dauns First Desirio and jockey Daniel Valles to win by a nose. IBA JP received every call and stopped the timer in :17.762, earning a speed index of 90.
Trained by David Palafox, IBA JP is owned by Jonathan Zambrano. The stakes tally improved IBA JP’s record to 23-4(1)-3-5 and improved his bankroll to $69,974 with the $9,000 winner’s share. The gelding was also a finalist in the 2013 West Texas Derby-G3.
Bred in Texas by Johnny Trotter/Burnett Ranches, IBA JP is the lone stakes winner and second stakes horse out of IBA Special. She has also produced multiple stakes placed winner IB Rapid.
Grade 3 stakes winner Dauns First Desirio (Desirio-First Daun Express), already twice stakes- placed this year, finished a close second for owner Rogelio Carbajal-Santos and trainer Eliazar Salas.
Hot Shot (Walk Thru Fire-Girl Secrets) closed strongly late under Malouly Rodriguez to finish third for owner-trainer Jose Antonio Moreno.
Jettin Ben (Easy Winning Jet-Nikita Ben), Toshi Yoshi (Pool-Mairis Money Maker) and Freighttrain V (Freighttrain B-LW Lady Val) completed the order of finish.
Leo Beau Dash
PERKIN DESIRE
by Emily Blankenship
Perkin Desire scored her first stakes victory in the $15,000 Leo Beau Dash at Arapahoe Park on June 30.
Under jockey Cerapio Figueroa, Perkin Desire
broke in third from the 2-post. The filly dug in and grabbed the lead at the first call. She stayed there throughout and expanded her lead to cross the wire a neck in front.
Racing with an 8 mph cross wind, the team completed the 400 yards in :19.852 over a fast track, posting a 94 speed index.
Perkin Desire brought home the $9,000 winner’s share of the purse for owner/trainer Roberto Gomez, boosting her total lifetime earnings to $29,810.
The filly now has a race record of 14-4(1)-1-2. Last year she qualified to the Lucille Rowe Derby with the second fastest qualifying time and was a finalist in the $30,000 Arapahoe Park Derby. Most of her appearances have been at Arapahoe, but in 2016, the filly was also the fastest qualifier to the John Deere Prairie Meadows Juvenile Challenge.
Randall and Kasey Hund bred Perkin Desire out of unraced Fols Perky Cat. Perkin Desire is her only starter.
SK Duck Dynasty (FDD Dyansty- Sentimentalromance TB) finished second under Alfredo Triana Jr. for owners Mason A. King & George L. Seward and trainer Manuel Chavez. The gelding won the 2017 89 & Under Stakes at Energy Downs.
Despite being bumped at the break, Too Long Kissin (Stel Corona-Kiptys First Kiss) and Ruben Castro came in third for owner/trainer Jorge Nava. The filly was third in the 2016 Western States Breeders Futurity at Wyoming Downs.
A Tac Man (Tac It Like A Man-Notimetobemad TB) was fourth and was followed by Go Streak Lightning (Shurnuf Streakin-Seis Star Glitter) and Toshi Yoshi (Pool-Mairis Money Maker).
