Fastest qualifier from the Sept. 25 trials, First

John Deere Will Rogers Downs Juvenile Challenge for two-year-olds on Oct. 9.
The 2-year-old sorrel gelding entered the 1-gate as the favorite and didn’t disappoint. He broke out
of the gate in third under jockey James Flores and quickly challenged the leaders. The pair dueled down the stretch with Hope Hes The One, but managed a 1-length lead at the wire. The pair galloped the 350- yard fast track in :17.539, taking advantage of a good start and earning a 95 speed index.
First Rate Return’s career earnings leaped to $70,040 after adding the $23,143 winner’s share of the purse to his previous total for owner Terry McLean and trainer Gerry McLean. First Rate Return was the second stakes winner of the day for the team as First Rate Return’s 1/2 brother Admiral Zoomwalt scored in the Zoetis Will Rogers Downs Distance Challenge.

ADMIRAL ZOOMWALT
by Dillon Hamilton
Admiral Zoomwalt kept his distance record per- fect in the $35,730 Zoetis Distance Challenge at Will Rogers Downs for three-year-olds and older horses on Oct. 9.
The 4-year-old sorrel gelding took his third stakes victory and second long distance stakes in the event. Admiral Zoomwalt may have found his niche at 870 yards under James Flores. In the Zoetis Will Rogers Downs Distance Challenge, Admiral Zoomwalt broke well from the 2-gate and gained a 1/2-length lead on Apollitical Courage in the stretch. Admiral Zoomwalt dueled any who dared to challenge and bested his competitors, holding off a late surge from Juno Dat Timber. Good conditions allowed the winning pair to cover the 870- yard track in :45.364, earning a 98 speed index.
The $17,865 winner’s share of the purse sets the gelding’s earnings at $104,278 for owner Terry McLean and trainer Gerry McLean.
