                                Cherokee Challenge Stakes
REDNECK SIS
by John Moorehouse
No stranger to the Cherokee Challenge Stakes, Redneck Sis won the event for the second time in her career on Oct. 22, getting to the finish line
first by a neck in the latest running of the $29,051 race at Will Rogers Downs.
A second victory in the Cherokee Challenge did not come easy. Redneck Sis emerged at the front of a blanket finish that saw five horses finish in a crowd. Trained by Bonnie Wilson, Redneck Sis broke well from the 2-gate and was a close second behind Just Coronation entering the stretch.
Jockey Randy Wilson did the riding as Redneck Sis finished the 300-yard out in :15.561, posting a 91 speed index into a 10 mph crosswind.
Redneck Sis also won the Cherokee Challenge Stakes in 2013, and now has three total stakes victories. She also captured the 2012 Fair Meadows Maturity. The eight-year-old mare improved her overall record to 13(3)-4(3)-6(1) in 50 lifetime starts. The $17,654 winner’s share of the purse swelled her cumulative earnings to $220,874.
Redneck Sis was home-bred in Oklahoma by Jack Wilson out of winner Dads Sassy Sissy, whom Wilson also owns. She has produced 100% money earners from five starters. Redneck Sis is her top earner and only stakes winner
20-1 longshot RC Corona (Rock Solid Jess- Shakiras Dash) finished second for owner Jamie Jordan and trainer Juliana Mancillas. Cody Wainscott drew the riding assignment. Just Coronation (Coronas Prospect-Nocoronajustbud) secured third place under Jesus Salazar for owner Sergio Covarrubias and trainer Erik Rodriguez-Garcia.
Win Rabbits Fly (Fly Jess Fly-Break The Market) finished fourth and was followed by Sixes Streak (Streakin Sixes-First Down Sixes), Toodles Flies
Free (Fly Jess Fly-Toodledoo Otoole) and Kansas Morning (FDD Dynasty-On A Run).
OQHRA Fall Classic
APOLLITICAL MAN
by Dillon Hamilton
Apollitical Man dominated his first stakes victory in the $18,720 OQHRA Fall Classic at Will Rogers Downs for three year olds and up on Oct. 15.
After easing to victories in a trio of allowances early in the season, the 4-year-old sorrel gelding finally caught what he’s been chasing. He started as the favorite from the 9-gate under jockey James Flores and led from the start. The pair strode out to an early 1/2-length lead and steadily inched away from the field. They finished the wire-to-wire comprehensive victory 3/4-lengths in front. The pair covered the 400-yard track in :19.842, earning a 92 speed index.
The gelding’s lifetime earnings spiked to $50,443 for owner Terry McLean and trainer Gerry McLean, after running away with the $10,530 winner’s share of the purse. Breeders James E. and Marilyn Helzer bred Apollitical Man out of winner Tinys Corona Queen in Oklahoma. She has produced 10 money earners from 11 starters, including top earner Rattle N Battle, who finished second in this year’s James Isaac Hobbs Stakes-G2. Apollitical Man is her first stakes winner.
I V Gone (Ivory James-Bye Bye Bygones) held sec- ond from wire-to-wire, but couldn’t match Apollitical Man’s speed. The 6-year-old black gelding gave an hon- orable effort under Cody Wainscott for owner Celesse Fregroso and trainer Juliana Mansillas. I Cant Help It (Corona Cartel- Pretty Girl Kate) couldn’t help finish- ing in show under Edgar Martinez. The 4-year-old black filly ran a solid race for owners Green D Ranch, LLC and trainer Manuel Martinez-Escobedo, Jr.
I Bleed Red (Red Storm Cat-Secret In Stone), Gospel Howdy (DMNV Mountable-Catie Rocks), Heza Chancer (Inseperable-Sheza Fast Kas), First Sweet Midnite (Sweet First Down-Midnite Soiree), Petes Favorite (Petes Wonder TB-Jiggle It Around), Blazen Panther (Panther Mountain-Blazen Madie) and Talktomeson (Streak and Dash-Not My Choice) completed the order of finish.
Don Drake Memorial
PAINTED TURNPIKE
by John Moorehouse
The wins and the prize money keep piling up for Painted Turnpike APHA, who won the Don Drake Memorial Stakes on Oct. 21 at Will Rogers Downs.
An APHA World Champion last year, Painted Turnpike won this race with authority. Cody Smith brought the colt out of the outside gate on top and promptly built a 1-length lead. Painted Turnpike led by daylight the rest of the way, pulling away late to boast a 1 3/4-length margin as he hit the wire.
Matt Whitekiller trains Painted Turnpike, who finished his 350-yard trip in :17.664 for a 91 speed index. The victory produced a $9,906 payday that pushed his total earnings to $309,856.
A 3-year-old colt home-bred by Nolan Pevehouse, Painted Turnpike now holds 13 wins in 16 career starts, and 10 of those victories have been in stakes company. That includes last year’s runnings of the Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1, the Speedhorse Lone Star Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1 and the Speedhorse Graham Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1, making Painted Turnpike the first competitor to win the Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Triple Crown since that series came into existence.
Stakes-placed winner High Class Turnpike, the dam of Painted Turnpike, has four foals whom are starters including 2015 Champion Gitter Dun Turnpike.
Dee Keener saddled the other two horses who hit the board. Light Em Up Corona APHA (Fire And Corona QH-Jungle Jane) finished second under Randy Wilson for owner Planefun, LLC. Champion Imahotchicken APHA (Royal Quick Flash-Game Chicken) is owned by Charles Leggett and had Jesus Salazar aboard.
MHM Hotwire APHA (Cartel Success QH-Elaina Go Go), Ten Bunny ApHC (Ten Streaks -The Energizer Bunny) and Wagonette APHA (PYC Paint Your Wagon QH-Shawne Chick) completed the field.
