MAVARA VEGAS

Mavara Vegas managed a game win in the $45,000 Grade 3 Keokuk Stakes at Prairie Meadows on Aug. 20 after coming off a win in the
Indiana Grand Classic Stakes.
Ridden by Cody Smith, Mavara Vegas broke
mid-pack from the 5-gate in the 400-yard fixture and rallied strongly in the lane, collaring and defeat- ing odds-on favorite Ajs High right at the finish
to score by a head. The 4-year-old chestnut filly reported home first in the time of :19.503, good for a speed index of 98.
It was the 4th stakes success for Mavara Vegas,
who now boasts earnings of $191,073 that include the $26,100 winner’s share of the purse for owner Alejandro Medina and trainer Sacramento Chavez. The win improved her career slate to 6(4)-2-1(1) from 17 starts.
Mavara Vegas was bred in California by Dunn Ranch, Ltd. out of the lightly-raced mare Jess Like Vegas. She has produced 100% money earners from four starters. Mavara Vegas is her first stakes winner and top money earner.
Ajs High (Apollitical Jess-Regally Rare) assumed command at the break and opened a 1-length advantage early before being caught late by the winner. Stormy Smith piloted the multiple stakes winner for owner Michael C. Teel and trainer Charley Hunt.
Multiple Stakes winner Sudden Separation (Inseperable-Okie Dokey Annie) finished third under Roberto Valero for owner Duane Murphy and trainer Larry Sharp.
Tempting Valor (Tempting Dash-Thanks Jens), A Will And Away (Spit Curl Jess-Fly By The Mall), A Royal Country Man (Country Chicks Man-A Royal Goddess) and Elegant Okey (Apollo TB-Okey Design) completed the order of finish. Apollitical Man, Gospel Howdy, I Cant Help It, Regard With Respect and Soraya Seis were scratched.

KOOL LIL JESS

They say every dog has his day, and the same can be said about horses. It was Kool Lil Jess’ day on Sept. 4 when she broke her maiden and won the finals of the Iowa Stallion Futurity at Prairie Meadows on Sept. 4.
The fifth fastest qualifier in the Aug. 21 trials dominated the field in the 350-yard race, finishing 1 3/4-lengths in front at the wire under jockey Cody Smith. The filly broke on top from the 5-gate for a wire-to-wire victory.
They stopped the clock at :18.169, earning the$36,723 winner’s share of the $82,540 purse. Kool Lil Jess now has total earnings of $37,338 and a race record of one win out of three starts.
The brown filly is owned by Tony Dean Jones and Ricky Neff. Jones also trains the filly.
Kool Lil Jess was bred in Iowa by Kevin Heims out of the 3-time winner and stakes finalist Jess Shine. Kool Lil Jess is her first foal.
Fastest qualifier Lil Stepper (Lil Kool Wagon-Ru Special) won her trial heat and pulled up second best in the finals. The gelding’s connec- tions include owner Michael A. Pohl and Bob Urich and trainer Stacy Charette-Hill. Jorge Torres was
in the irons.
MGA Lil Kool Wilena (Lil Kool Wagon-Time For Wilena) finished third under Roberto Valero. Her team includes owner John L. Herrick and Connie L. Young. Shawna Manriquez took over the conditioning for the trials and finals.

Iowa Stallion Derby
TRS AMAZING LEON

TRS Amazing Leon narrowly earned a spot into the finals of the $67,905 Iowa Stallion Derby at Prairie Meadows on Sept. 4.
In the Aug. 21 trials, he posted the tenth fastest qualifying time of :20.745 and improved his time in the finals to :20.505 while facing a 15 mph head wind in the 400-yard race. Dan Miller took over as trainer for the homebred gelding in the trials and finals for owner/breeder Vernon Hammes and has improved the gelding considerably.
TRS Amazing Leon stepped away from the 7-gate under jockey Dale Beaty and began to lengthen his stride and rally strong to cross the wire 1/2-length in front. The gelding broke his maiden and earned the $30,212 winners share of the purse, boosting his total earnings to $35,851.
TRS Amazing Leon was bred in Iowa by owner/ breeder Vernon Hammes out of winner/stakes placed TRS Maes Dash who has produced 100% money earners from five starters including stakes placed TRS He Be A Skirt and TRS Amazing Zach. TRS Amazing Leon is her first stakes winner.
Fastest qualifier Shesa Vivian (Just Amazing Jess-Shesa Eye Of Rose) finished second under Cody Smith. Her team includes owner Jan P. Bockenstedt and trainer Tony Jones.
