FERRARIJAMES
by Dillon Hamilton
Abrisk head wind couldn’t keep Ferrari James from his first stakes win in the $84,179 Iowa Double Gold Derby at Prairie Meadows on Sept. 3.
The 3-year-old bay gelding started from the post position seven and was fourth out of the gate. Ferrari James geared up late to rally on the field and take first under Oscar Delgado. The pair won by a neck, legging out the finish. They covered the 400-yard fast track in :19.992 and earned an 85 speed index.
After winning the Aug. 20 trial by a neck in :19.452 for the fastest qualifying time, Ferrari James kept his winning form for owner Alfredo Botello and trainer Manuel Campos, narrowly edging out the field with his late rally.
Ferrari James was bred in Oklahoma by Weetona Stanley and W. E. Smith out of lightly raced Ferarri Fast Prize. She has produced 100% money earners from 12 starters including top money earner V Power, who finished second in this year’s Remington Park Oklahoma Bred Futurity-RG2, and Dash For Cash Futurity-G1 runner-up Ferrari GT. Ferrari James is her first stakes winner.
The Fiscal Cliff (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Signs Zoomer) started slow, hopping the start under Cesar Gomez, but continued the rally theme of the race to hold place, showing good speed for owner Thomas D. Lepic and trainer Shawna Manriquez.
Prized Wagon (PYC Paint Your Wagon-First Prize Honey) utilized a surge of late energy to finish third under Cristian Esqueda for owner Joel Rod Pierce and trainer Gina Downing.
There Goes My Wallet (Mr Piloto-Coronita Cartel), Okeyfreight (Freighttrain B-Okey Dokey Eyes), Freighttrain V (Freighttrain B-LW Lady Val), Divas Candy Girl (Spit Curl Jess-Some Kinda Diva) and Candys Little Wagon (PYC Paint Your Wagon- Jess A Candy Gal) completed the order of finish. DD Chicks Piloto and Kokko Wagon were scratched.

FASTERTHANHASTA

Faster Than Hasta wasn’t the quickest away from the blocks in the John Deere Prairie Meadows Juvenile Challenge on Sept. 17, receiving the 9th call from
the inside post, but the 2-year-old gelding steadily progressed to the front along the rail to win the 350-yard test. The victory earned him a berth in the $150,000 guaranteed John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship-G2 on Oct. 29 at Los Alamitos.
Ridden by Cody Smith, Faster Than Hasta broke just a step slow & raced in 4th position early. He moved to the front in the late stages and prevailed by a neck over hard-charging race favorite CR Game Changer. Faster Than Hasta covered the distance in :17.705, for
a 90 speed index for trainer Robert Johnson. It was the 2nd stakes score for Faster Than Hasta, who captured the Minnesota Stallion Breeders’ Futurity in July at Canterbury Park. This latest win increased his bankroll by $24,426 to $62,721 for owner John G. Johnson.

Abundanz earned a berth in the Oct. 29 Bank of America Challenge Championship-G1 with a victory at Prairie Meadows. He upset 1-2 favorite AJs High in the Bank of America Prairie Meadows Championship Challenge-G2 on Sept. 17.
Both Abundanz and AJs High had to overhaul early leaders Tempting Valor and Burst Of Dash late in the 440-yard event. Abundanz, ridden by Oscar Delgado, narrowly edged the favorite by a head, stopping the clock in :21.496. Gustavo Almanza, Jr. and Francisco Raul Hernandez own Abundanz, and Julio Almanza trains the gelding, who set a 330-yard track record at Indiana Grand in an allowance race earlier this year.

Michael Teel’s homebred AJs High (Apollitical Jess-Regally Rare) was second by 3/4-length. Stormy Smith piloted the 4-year-old gelding for trainer Charles Hunt. AJs High earlier this year won the Bank of America Canterbury Championship Challenge.
