KISSED BY AN EAGLE
by Tracy Gantz
Kissed By An Eagle had to overcome a very trou- bled trip in his Aug. 6 trial for the John Deere Los Alamitos Juvenile Championship Challenge,
veering in and taking bumps from both sides. He finished third, but still managed to qualify for the final, and then he returned to win the big event on Aug. 20.
The final had its share of traffic troubles, too, but Kissed By An Eagle avoided them. He and jockey Cesar DeAlba shot to the lead when the gate opened and scored by 3/4-length in :17.609 for the 350 yards. The $20,617 winner’s share of the purse boosted the geldings earnings to $24,655.
Rafael Orozco trains Kissed By An Eagle for owners Mark and Peggy Brown, who bred the geld- ing in Idaho. Their stakes-winning homebred mare, Dreaming Of Kisses, has produced both Kissed By An Eagle, who broke his maiden in his first start, and winner Dreamingwithattitude, her only starters to date.
Ron Hartley’s homebred One Proud Eagle (One Famous Eagle-Guy Chasing), trained by John Cooper, ran second. Tony Guymon piloted the gelding, who won the Robert Adair Kindergarten Futurity-G2 earlier this year.
Bannister (Maknmoves-Goddess Artemis), rid- den by Cruz Mendez, was third. Monty Arossa trains the gelding for owners Denny and Sandy Weigt. Bannister won the 2016 Beehive Futurity.
Paint A Candy Storm (Red Storm Cat-Send
Me Candy Paint) finished fourth. Fooseability (Foose-Checkcashingability) finished fifth but was disqualified for interference and placed last. That moved Red Cocoperry (Mr Jess Perry-Cocopata) to fifth, and he was followed by Severe Clear (Cartel Success-DSW Zipper), New Fangled (Foose-Go And Dash), and Brimmin Corona (Fantastic Corona Jr-Brimin Special).
Pat Hyland Memorial Handicap
JESS HAWK
by Tracy Gantz
Jess Hawk would be special to owner Enrique Gonzalez even if she weren’t a stakes winner because she is the only filly he has out of the mare Merridoc Hawk.
“Merridoc Hawk died, but this filly made her mother’s memory proud tonight,” said Gonzalez after Jess Hawk captured the Pat Hyland Memorial Handicap at Los Alamitos on Aug. 28.
Jess Hawk, with jockey Jesus Ayala aboard,
won the Pat Hyland despite Stelfast brushing her at the break. Jess Hawk challenged Apollitical Seven, and the two came to the wire together, Jess Hawk winning by a head in :17.848 for the 350 yards. The filly earned the $13,750 winner’s share of the purse and boosted her earnings to $24,285.
“I have a lot of faith in this filly,” said trainer Yanet Rodriguez. “This was a tough field. We had to see what we had with her, so I nominated her to this stakes and it looks like it turned out good.”
Gonzalez bred Jess Hawk in California in the name of his EG High Desert Farms. Gonzalez also bred and raced California Hi-Point Aged Mare Merridoc Hawk. She is a 5-time stakes winner and multiple stakes placed mare who has produced 100% money earners and two winners in three starters.
Jaime Gomez trains second-place Apollitical Seven (Apollitical Jess-Chalala) and owns the filly with Juan Escobedo. Carlos Huerta piloted Apollitical Seven.
Favored AJS Anna Smoke (Separatist-Annas Babe) ran third with Cesar DeAlba aboard. John Cooper trains the gelding for owner Rod MacPherson, Jr.
Completing the field were Hopes And Dreams (FDD Dynasty-Southern Fury), Favorite Quick Chick (Favorite Cartel-Iba Quick Chick) and Stelfast (Stel Corona-The Goodbye Kisser). Kiddy Up Cowgirl was scratched.
Fall For It Handicap
KICKIN SEIS
by Tracy Gantz
Kickin Seis didn’t make her 2016 debut until September, but it was worth the wait. In only her second attempt at a stakes, she captured the Fall For
It Handicap at Los Alamitos on Sept. 16.
With G. Rangel aboard, Kickin Seis kicked away
from the gate from post seven on the lead. She never relinquished it, despite a good effort by Summer Dynasty on the rail. Kickin Seis defeated that rival by 3/4-length in :16.681 for the 330 yards. The $8,250 winners share of the purse boosted the fillys earnings to $28,450.
Jose Flores trains Kickin Seis and owns her
with Howard Nichols. She broke her maiden at
first asking in April 2015, but could never put two victories back to back as a juvenile. In September, she scored in an allowance race, and ended the year with another allowance win in December.
Deleyco Race Team Corp. bred Kickin Seis in California from winner Kickin Escalation, who has produced 100% money earners from three starters. The second dam, Imjumpn, also produced the sires Jumpn and Jumpn Chic.
Dutch Masters III’s Summer Dynasty (FDD Dynasty-Summer Love Song) ran second under jockey Rodrigo Aceves for trainer Jaime Gomez. The filly was coming off a second in the Wild Honey Handicap.
Walk Thru Crystal (Walk Thru Fire-Corona Crystal), a two-time graded futurity winner at Los Alamitos in 2015, finished third. Jesus Ayala rode her for owner EG High Desert Farms and trainer Yanet Rodriguez.
Completing the field were One Sweet Winner (One Sweet Jess-We Have A Winner), High Class Cartel (TR Dasher-Haute Cartel), Maggie Durant (One Sweet Jess-Up Down Dash), Strawfinders Jessee (One Sweet Jess-Strawfinder), and Gotcha Bella (Mr Jess Perry-Designateddriver).
