MOONIST
by Tracy Gantz
How good Moonist is continues to be a huge ques- tion. He simply keeps winning at Los Alamitos, most recently in the Oct. 17 Robert L. Boniface Los
Alamitos Invitational Championship-G1. Moonist made an “absolutely perfect start,”
according to track announcer Ed Burgart. Far Niente stumbled slightly out of the gate and made up ground toward the end of the 440 yards. But Moonist, under regular rider Cesar DeAlba, held him off to win by 1/2-length in :21.504 as the 1-2 favorite.
John Cooper trains Moonist for owner Ron Hartley. Moonist was winning his 11th stakes
at Los Alamitos. Four came in derbies last year, when Moonist was named Champion 3-Year-Old Gelding. He earned a berth in the Champion of Champions-G1 with the victory in the Robert L. Boniface Invitational Championship.
Vessels Stallion Farm LLC bred Moonist in California, and Hartley bought him for $21,500 at the 2012 Los Alamitos Equine Sale. Moonist is out of 2001 Champion 2 Year Old/Champion 2-Year-Old Filly Your First Moon. The mare has produced 8 win- ners from 11 starters, including additional stakes win- ners Jess My Moon, Stray Cat & Moonin The Eagle.
Far Niente (FDD Dynasty-Shahayla), whose most recent stakes victory came in the Vessels Maturity-G1, ran 2nd for jockey Eduardo Nicasio, trainer Jose Hernandez Jr. and owners Tom Atwood & John Wells. Steve Burn’s Seperate Interest (Separatist-A Delightful Legacy) finished third with Oscar Peinado aboard. Mike Casselman trains the 5-year-old multiple stakes winner. Followed by Rock You (Foose-Babe On The Fly), French Fury (Stoli-Streakin Jessie Gail), Well And Good (Separatist-How Good), Remarkableyesapoweer (Eyesa Special-Remarkable Power), Fiery Kimbo (Walk Thru Fire-Kimbo With Class), Joe Legacy (Brookstone Bay-A Diamond Legacy) & All Out Arrogant (FDD Dynasty-Oh So Arrogant).
Wild West Futurity
ZOOMIN FOR SPUDS
by Tracy Gantz
Zoomin For Spuds took the long route to Los Alamitos, but it looks like the California track
is his favorite. In two starts there, he won his Oct.
4 trial (as the fastest qualifier) and the final of the Wild West Futurity on Oct. 25.
Cesar DeAlba has ridden Zoomin For Spuds in those Los Alamitos efforts for trainer Bret Vickery and owner/breeder Jim Walker. DeAlba got Zoomin For Spuds to break away second from the 7-hole,
and the gelding quickly took the lead. They held
off Tickle Ur Fancy at the wire to win the 350-yard futurity by a neck in :17.720.
Zoomin For Spuds began his career at Les Bois Park in his native Idaho, finishing second in three starts. At Ruidoso Downs, he ran second twice and third once.
Walker bred Zoomin For Spuds from winner A Perfect Cocktail, who has produced three starters, including stakes winners Bux For Cocktail and Jesses Perfect One.
Santiago Mendez piloted Hayden Brothers Ranch’s Tickle Ur Fancy (Dominyun-Sizzling Lola) to second for trainer Danny Montes. The second- fastest qualifier, Tickle Ur Fancy was second in her trial to Zoomin For Spuds. Mark and Peggy Brown’s homebred Timely Delivery (Volcom-One Prompt Chick) ran third for jockey Jose Alvarez and trainer Rafael Orozco. The gelding finished second in his Oct. 4 trial after winning The Plan Handicap. Completing the field were Dr Stellar (Stel Corona-Follow Her Down) in fourth, fol-
lowed by On Fire (Fire And Corona-Californias Chick), Fames Jess Sweet (One Sweet Jess-Go
For Fame), Bo Dash Back (Bodacious Dash-Dash Back To Me), Fixer Upper (Separatist-Halfpast Aheartbreak), First Prize Chicks (Spit Curl Jess-First Prize Chic), and Fabulous Corona (Stel Corona-Shes Fabulous).
Wild West Juvenile
OTTA BE A PRIZE
by Tracy Gantz
Bumping and stumbling at the start have cost Otta Be A Prize several victories during his 2 year old career. But, he got his act together to win the Oct. 24
Wild West Juvenile at Los Alamitos.
With Cody Jensen aboard for the first time, Otta
Be A Prize broke out of the 2-hole perfectly and went right to the front. This gave him a huge advantage over the rest of the field, leading at every subsequent call. He capitalized on his strong break to win by 1/2-length in :17.939 for the 350-yards.
Justin Clark trains Otta Be A Prize at Los Alamitos. Ron and Laurie Moosman bred the geld- ing in Utah. Ron owns him in partnership with Gordon Knudsen. Ron Moosman trained Otta Be A Prize earlier this year at Sweetwater Downs.
Otta Be A Prize won two futurity trials prior to the Wild West Juvenile. He won his trial and quali- fied to the Western States Breeders Futurity and won his trial and qualified to the Beehive Futurity.
Otta Be A Prize is out of Otta Be Special, winner of the 2004 Diamond Classic Derby and three times stakes-placed. The mare has produced three starters, all winners.
Jesus Ayala piloted Reed Pierson’s homebred Swiper B Sonic (Hawkinson-YR Brown Lucy) to second. Paul Jones trains the gelding, who broke his maiden at Los Alamitos in August.
Johnny Trotter’s homebred Famous Cartel Lady (Corona Cartel-One Famous Lady) ran third for jockey Carlos Huerta and trainer Jaime Gomez. The filly has won two of her five starts, including the Knight Transportation Futurity.
Completing the field were Stelebration (Stel Corona-Royal Heights), Make My Daze (Tac
It Like A Man-Daze Of Summer), Ettago This (Favorite Cartel-Dashing Ettago), Jess Pollitical (Apollitical Jess-Chickado Doll), and Dynamites LS (Hadtobenuts-Dynamiten The Tetons).
