DISCONTENT
by Danny Camp
It’s been a long dry spell for Discontent and he hasn’t had his picture taken in the winners circle for over
a year. The drought ended on Oct. 30, however, as
the gelding won the 400-yard $25,000 Town Policy Stakes at Los Alamitos. Discontent broke from the number nine in second place and within a few strides he was 1/2-length in front. With relentless encour- agement from rider Rodrigo Aceves, they crossed
the wire 1/2-length in front. They stopped the
clock at :19.978 earning a speed index of 85. They also earned first place money of $13,750 making a total bankroll of $174,087 for Discontent and a race record of five wins out of 11 starts for owner Edward C. Allred and trainer Scott Willoughby. Discontent also won last year’s Governor’s Cup Futurity-G1.
Discontent was bred in California by Ed Allred out of QHBC Distaff Classic-G3 winner Reeds Val. The mare has produced 11 winners from 12 starters. Discontent is her highest money earner and first stakes winner.
Cold Cartel (Walk Thru Fire-Corona Fria)
was sharp at the break and showed a game effort
to pocket the second place check. His connections include owner Rosalinda Gonzalez and trainer Mario Garcia. Jesus Ayala was in the irons.
Walk The Catwalk (Walk Thru Fire-Alley Cat Cartel) stumbled away from the gate but recovered nicely to place third under Cesar DeAlba. His con- nections includes owner Steve D. Burns and trainer Mike Casselman.
Followed by Cartels Big Gun (Corona Cartel- Five Bar Molly), Old Six Six (Walk Thru Fire- Kingman Kin), Koolist (Separatist-Im Willie Kool), Jp Future Secret (Furrtreeous-Cocas Secret), One More Card (Carters Cartel-Docs First Card), First Down Tiny Man (Tinys First Corona-High And Loose TB) & Straw Dawg (Strawfly Special-Rieda Hay Worth).
Autumn Handicap
KNOCKINGONTHEDOOR
by Tracy Gantz
Owner-breeder Ed Allred and trainer Scott Willoughby proved a tough combination in the Oct. 10 Autumn Handicap at Los Alamitos.
Willoughby saddled two Allred homebreds for the 350-yard race for 2 year olds, and they finished one-two, Knocking On The Door defeating her stablemate Nymph.
Despite drawing the outside post, Knocking On The Door broke perfectly straight for jockey Eulices Gomez. She led throughout, though Miss Sadie Thompson on the rail stuck with her for the entire race and Nymph closed ground late. Knocking On The Door edged them both, by a neck and a nose, in :17.847.
Knocking On The Door had been racing to her name, having won 1 race in 8 starts, with 3 seconds and a third, prior to the Autumn Handicap. Allred bred Knocking On The Door in partnership with Tom Seibly in California, and they race her in part- nership. Allred and Seibly campaigned her dam, The Partys On Fire, who captured the 2009 Golden State Million Futurity-G1. The mare has produced 3 win- ners in 4 starters, including stakes winner Bouncer.
Allred also bred and owns second-place Nymph (Foose-Elans Last), and Carlos Huerta piloted her for Willoughby. Nymph broke her maiden in her debut and finished third in a futurity trial.
Double Bar S Ranch LLC’s homebred Miss Sadie Thompson (Walk Thru Fire-Rieda Hay Worth) ran third for jockey Jesus Ayala and trainer Paul Jones. Winner of her first two races, the filly qualified for the Governor’s Cup Futurity-RG2 and finished fifth in the final.
Completing the field were One Sweet Boggie (One Sweet Jess-Boggie Woggie), Thru The Night (Walk Thru Fire-Night Lines), and Miss Special Regard (Chicks Regard-The Special Side). Big Time Wild was scratched.
Laguna Beach Handicap
JOE LEGACY
by Michael Cusortelli
Joe Legacy, a 4-year-old gelding owned by Greg Torgerson, earned his first win of the season when he captured the $15,000 Laguna Beach Handicap at Los Alamitos on Nov. 8.
Ridden by Eduardo Nicasio for trainer Jose Hernandez Jr., Joe Legacy covered his 300-yard trip in :15.464. His winning margin was 1/2-length from El Rey Coronas.
Joe Legacy was earning his sixth win in the Laguna Beach Handicap. He pushed his bankroll to $80,258 with the $8,250 winner’s share from this race.
Joe Legacy was dropping in class and distance going into the Laguna Beach, as he was coming off of a ninth-place finish in the 440-yard $125,000 Robert L. Boniface Los Alamitos Invitational Championship-G1 on Oct. 17.
So far, he has won four stakes, including the $38,667 Ed Giles Memorial Futurity at Laurel Brown Racetrack near Salt Lake City in 2013.
Joe Legacy was bred by The Running A LLC of Helper, Utah, and is one of four winners from five starters produced by winner A Diamond Legacy. The gelding’s second dam, stakes winner Bring Me Diamonds, was graded stakes placed in the Intermountain region in 1996.
El Rey Coronas (Foose-Lotsalacy) outran his 14-1 odds to run second for owner Down River Ranch LLC. Samuel Mendez rode the 3-year-old colt for trainer Antonio Soto.
Muller Racing LLC’s Ocean Won Away (Ocean Runaway-A Tempting Chick) finished third, 3/4-length behind Joe Legacy. The homebred 5-year- old gelding was ridden by Carlos Huerta for trainer Denny Ekins.
Balata Joe Now (Im Alright Now-Balata)
ran fourth and was followed by 7-5 favorite Tres Magicals (Tres Seis-Fishers Proud) and Old Girl (Stel Corona-Female First).
