SOUTHERN ELECTRIC
by John Moorehouse
Southern Electric went into the PSBA American Paint Classic Futurity-G1 as the even-money favorite, going wire-to-wire to win the $129,500 stakes held at Remington Park on April 27.
Southern Electric charged into black type with an impressive effort. He broke on top from the outside starting gate in a 10-horse field, led by a neck at the first call and continued to widen the gap at every remaining junc-
ture. Rider Cody Smith had
Southern Electric out in front
by 1/2-length as he entered the
stretch, and they pulled away
to win by 3/4-lengths.
“It was a perfect trip,” Smith said in the press release. “Got out of the gate well and moved straight down the track. That’s exactly what you want in a futurity.”
With three victories in four starts, Southern Electric pushed his total earnings

NEW NEWS

Ten qualifiers from the March 29 trials lined up to run in the $210,852 West Texas Derby-G3 finals at Sunland Park, and in the end we learned that New News is good news.
After qualifing fastest with a 3 1/4-length victory, New News loaded into the number 8-post for the main event and when the gates opened, he did not disappoint.
New News broke in the middle of the pack, but quickly took command under J. Ramirez, and they fin-
ished a neck to the good.
They completed the 400 yards in :19.059 to earn a speed index of 103.
The gelding also earned first place money of $99,101, which boosted his cumula- tive earnings to $118,181.
New News now has a race record of 8-3(1)-2(0)- 1(0). and he remains unde- feated in three starts in his sophomore campaign.
to $63,123 with the $49,210 prize from his first career stakes win. Dan and Kaye Jones home-bred Southern Electric, who is trained by Matt Whitekiller. The gelding had his regular rider in the irons.
It’s not the first time these connections pooled their efforts to win this race. The Joneses, Whitekiller and Smith now have
reached the winner’s circle in the past three runnings of the PSBA American Paint Classic Futurity. Live Moonshine won the 2018 version of the race, while Bully Pulpit triumphed in the 2017 contest.
“He’s a full brother
to a filly we had last year that made a lot of money,” Whitekiller said in a release from Remington Park after the race. “We’re very happy for the owners. I wish they could have been here.”
More impressive is the fact that he has won his last three in a row since Ricardo Armendariz has been in charge of train- ing. His connections include owner Elco Armendariz and Omar Ruiz Jr. and trainer Ricardo Armendariz.
Bennie and Terri Jeter bred New News out of winner Executive Promises, who is a full sister to Champion Distance Horse Executive Trust. Executive Promises has produced 100%
money earners from three starters. New News is her first stakes winner and top money earner.
New News is sired by Majestic Cartel, a full brother to Champion and last year’s leading first-crop sire Five Bar Cartel.
Second fastest qualifier CDS Wine N Dine (FDD Dynasty-Jess Adoration)
ran true to form under Paul Garcia. The colt has one thing
Bell N Wire APHA (CRM Livewire- Junglebell) beat Wired Special APHA (CRM Livewire-Glitzee QH) by a nose for second place. Roy Kent Perkins owns Bell N Wire, a Ray Enlow trainee who had Justine Klaiber in the irons. Wired Special is owned by Ken and Reba George. Loyd Moreland is the trainer and Agustin Silva did the riding.
The remaining order of finish was CL Victorias Secret APHA (SF Royal Quick Flash-Corona Lace), Moonpiebywire APHA (CRM Livewire-Moonpie Marauder), Babe Wired APHA (CRM Livewire-Biker Babe), WF Dashing Warrior APHA (The Dashing Hero- Biker Chick), JM Country Quick Dash APHA (Country Quick Dash-Royal Grip), WF Rain Maclane APHA (The Dashing Hero-Smashed Calamity QH) and Goodbye Loretta APHA (The Dashing Hero-Sayonara).
in common with the winner, he has won his last two in a row and just barely missed on this one with a new trainer. The team consists of owner German Amaya and trainer Jimmy Guerra. Midday News (FDD Dynasty-Summer
Love) and Felipe Garcia-Luna were third for owners Linda Joiner, Pat Smith, Izora Southway, Holly King & Kelly Allen and trainer Justin Joiner.
CD Better Be First (First Down Dash- Beter Tobe Separate), Guardianne (Valiant Hero-Bovet), Ganster Americano (Corona Cartel-Matabari), Walking On Katella (Walk Thru Fire-Katie Katella), George W 43 (Corona Cartel-Foxy Moonflash), Canonball Run (American Runaway-Sinuous) and Rustys Miracle (Valiant Hero-Rustys Lil Lady) completed the order of finish. C Breeze was scratched.
