                                Sunburst Stakes-RG3
WAHENE VERSION
by Danny Camp
New Mexico bred three-year-old fillies were center stage for the 350-yard $85,000 Sunburst Stakes-RG3 at Sunland Park on April 6.
Wahene Version broke from the 4-post and fell to her knees, but quickly pulled herself together and took command and had a head lead at the first call.
Halfway down the course, she and jockey Edgar Martinez were still a head in front and they contin- ued to extend their lead to cross the wire 1/2-length in front of the competition. Wahene Version com- pleted the 350 yards in :17.040 to earn a career-high 105 speed index.
The filly brought home the $51,000 winner’s share of the purse for owner Erick Carrillo and trainer Beatriz Sanchez, boosting her total earnings to $100,062. Her race record now stands at 10-4(1)-1-0, with this marking her first victory in stakes company.
Dirk Jones bred Wahene Version out of lightly raced Wahene Kai, a full sister to Gwendolyn Eaves’ stakes winner and Namehimastreaker New Mexico Classic Futurity-RG2 runner-up PK Bay. Wahene Version is her first starter.
Woodys Copy Cat (Woodbridge-Fast Copy Miss) ran a steady and even race under Manuel Gutierrez to pocket second place money for owner Enrique Barrera and trainer Cynthia Gonzalez.
First Theory V (Van Zant-Perrys First) and J. R. Ramirez were third for owner Valeriano Racing Stables LLC and trainer Ricardo Armendariz.
Vintage Vaquera (Big Daddy Cartel-Kim Crawford), Zee James (Jesse James Jr-On A Bunny), Cambria Cartel (Big Daddy Cartel-FDD Cambria), Fireball Flash (First Moonflash-Runaway Dashing), U Got The Look (Jesse James Jr-The Masters), Tooflashyforyou (First Moonflash-Holland Fire) and Cristobell Fame (Jesse James Jr-Sandys Fame) completed the order of finish. Reyna Azul and VGC Catrina were scratched.
Easy Date Stakes
JESSIE MARIE
by Michael Compton
Despite having won six of nine starts at Remington Park heading into the $72,750 Easy Date Stakes on April 20, the 5-year-old mare Jessie
Marie was overlooked by the wagering public in her first start of the year and was dismissed at odds of 38-1 in the 350-yard test.
With Edwuin Lujan riding for trainer Manuel Almanza and owner Palomino Trucking Inc., Jessie Marie left the starting gate in sixth, but quickly caught up with the leaders. She dueled throughout and fought bravely the length of the lane with 4-5 race favorite Curls Happy Wagon to defeat that rival by a head at the finish and spring the upset. Jessie Marie covered the distance in :17.603, earning an 87 speed index.
The $41,250 winner’s share of the purse boosted her bankroll to $128,115. She is a stakes winner now and has nine wins from 19 starts with a second-place finish and three third-place finishes on her slate.
Dolores Hill bred Jessie Marie out of the PYC Paint Your Wagon mare Traffic Wagon, who won her 2010 Oklahoma Futurity trial and finished third in the Grade 2 finals.
Curls Happy Wagon (PYC Paint Your Wagon- Eye A Spit Curl Girl) and jockey Jorge Torres
led throughout, but finished second for owners Michael Pohl & Martin Stacy and trainer Stacy Charette-Hill.
Weetonas Lafawn (Valiant Hero-First Prize Fancy) and Cody Smith closed ground late to finish third for owner Cavenaugh Quarter Horses and trainer Clinton Crawford.
Followed by Preyn On the Mountain (Ivory James-Prey), First of 15 (Apollitical Jess-Tinys Corona Queen), Mamasito Magic (Pappasito-Ms Optical Illusion), Priceless (Furrtreeous-Mercy Mea), Splendid Cause (Apollitical Jess-Answer the Dream) and Fly N Tell (Coronado Cartel-Strawfly Sister). Trace Dynasty was scratched.
Mr Jet Moore Stakes-RG2
ADMIRAL STING
by John Moorehouse
This Remington Park meet has been good to Admiral Sting and his connections. The four- year-old colt tallied his second stakes win of the 2019 Remington meet, leading at every call in the $72,000 Mr Jet Moore Stakes-RG2 on April 4.
Home-bred by Jahree Standridge, Admiral Sting posted his sixth overall win in his 16th career start. Those totals include his victorious effort in last month’s Mighty Deck Three Stakes-G3, held on Remington’s opening night. In between, the colt finished fifth in the March 28 Eastex Stakes-G2.
In the Mr Jet Moore Stakes-RG2, Admiral
Sting had no equal. The colt broke in just a bit as he emerged from the 4-post, but still had the lead and stayed ahead from there. Jockey Jimmy Brooks had Admiral Sting running in front by 1/2-length as he reached both the first call and the stretch. He pulled away late, winning by 3/4-length and completing the 350-yard trip in :17.532 for an 89 speed index.
Standridge collected a $41,400 payday that improved Admiral Sting’s total earnings to $158,681. Eddie Willis trains Admiral Sting, whose dam, Sting Scorpion Sting, also holds a stakes victory at Remington in the 2006 Quick Silver Stakes. The 2004 mare has two foals that have black type. The other is Pollitical Scorpion, a full-sister to Admiral Sting who won the Easy Date Handicap at this same track in 2016.
Bye Byefreighttrain (Freighttrain B-Bye Bye Bygones) and Jonathan Dominguez were 2nd for owner L.P. Frank & trainer Shawna Manriquez. Home Boy James (Ivory James-Sacchi MMG) was 3rd under Cody Wainscott for owner Jose Martinez & trainer Erik Rodriguez-Garcia. Followed by Peighnt Your Fate (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Fate Cant Weight), Racanteur (High Rate Of Return-Shanachee), Freighttrain B
Fast (Freighttrain B-Excessive Chatter), Valiant Rogue (Valiant Hero-Azoom Babe) and pre-race favorite Ajs High (Apollitical Jess-Regally Rare).
