Multiple stakes-placed winner Sen Tosa, the first foal out of Friona bred by Mickey and Stanley Johnson, is a half-sister to Ivoriona. Sen Tosa, like Ivoriona, is a representative of the Corona Cartel/Texas Hero cross.
Friona, Ivoriona’s dam, came as a three-in-one package. The mare had a 2006 filly
at her side named
Princess Friona and she was carrying a colt by Azoom named Kazoom
(pictured here with Friona).
responded, “My dad bred a mare to Powder Charge in the early 70’s and we got a
big loud filly out of that Quarter mare. Something about that loud filly just stayed with me. I have always liked the Paint horses. They had him down at Wynnewood, and
the next year he bred her to a horse named Painted Jewel and got another loud filly. I guess I was hooked.”
The first foal Mickey and Stanley Johnson bred out of Friona was Sen Tosa,
by PYC Paint Your Wagon. “I used to ride with Randy down to Mr. Pohl’s (PYC Paint Your Wagon breeder Michael Pohl) and I
got to see both PYC Paint Your Wagon and Ivory James when they were colts,” Mickey explained. “We followed PYC Paint Your Wagon real close. We were there for about all of his races. We were a big fan of the horse. So I was around him a bunch, but I never dreamed I would get to breed to him. Randy was working for Mr. Pohl, and he offered us a breeding. That is why we did it. That gave us a nice mare named Sen Tosa.”
PYC Paint Your Wagon put together
a very good race record. He was a stakes winner of four races, including the Texas Classic Futurity-G1 and Lazy E Futurity- RG2. Then, he came back at three to win the Texas Classic Derby-G1 and Heritage Place Derby-G1. He earned $889,581 in 16 starts with seven wins, four seconds and two thirds.
PYC Paint Your Wagon is the sire over
$26 million, including 706 ROM and 90 stakes winners. He was the 2015 leading sire of money earners with $4.8 million. His overall leading money earner is Im A Fancy PYC with $454,765. And, 2015 Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Triple Crown winner/High-Point Champion Painted Turnpike is sired by PYC Paint Your Wagon. Painted Turnpike was the 2015 APHA World Champion Running Breeding Stock Horse, Champion Two Year Old, and Champion Two-Year-Old Colt. He won
a total of 10 stakes races, five at two and then an additional five at three, including the Speedhorse Graham Paint & Appaloosa Derby-G1. He has earned $315,494.
Sen Tosa earned her black type as a stakes placed runner with a second in the 2011 Lone Star Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1
at Lone Star Park, a third in the 2012 Speedhorse Graham Paint & Appaloosa Derby-G1 at Remington Park, and a third in the 2011 Colors of the Alamo Futurity
at Retama Park. She earned $36,653 with two wins, four seconds, and two thirds
from eleven starts. She was a finalist in two additional stakes races, including the 2011 Tulsa State Fair Stakes-G2 at Fair Meadows and the 2011 Oklahoma Paint Futurity- RG1 at Remington Park. Sen Tosa is now a broodmare for Stanley and Mickey Johnson, and she will have a foal by Royal Quick Flash in 2017.
Oklahoma, and that is where the horse racing was when I was a kid. Later, I would go to Ruidoso with Randy and his dad some. Then, I grew up and I had to go to work and I was away from it for about 20 years.
“When I decided to get back into it, Dad and I went and bought a mare named Friona when Graham Farms dispersed,” Mickey continued. “I guess that was about 10 years ago. We liked the mare and they sold some awful good Paint mares that day. She was the one we liked. She was nothing extra, just a big ole mare. She was a hard-knocking type of mare. I had watched her run and she was an honest mare.”
Friona was a multiple stakes placed runner that earned $40,070. She was a finalist in four Grade 1 stakes races, with a second in the 2003 American Paint Classic Futurity at Remington Park and a third in the 2003 Graham Paint Futurity-RG1 at Lone Star Park. She traveled the country, competing at Sam Houston Race Park in
the Olympia Joe Handicap-G1 and at Los Alamitos in the Masterpiece Paint Derby-G1, as well as at Fair Meadows and Blue Ribbon Downs. Mickey and Stanley Johnson purchased Friona as a three-in-one package: she had a filly at her side that they named Princess Friona, who was by Ausual Suspect, and she was in foal to a colt by Azoom that they named Kazoom.
