Zia 870 Championship
DM Nate Dog
by Danny Camp
DM Nate Dog notched his first stakes win in the $50,000 Zia 870 Championship at Ruidoso Downs on July 29.
Under jockey Raul Herrera, the gelding broke from the 1-post. He didn’t go to the front immedi- ately, but he hung in there enough so as not to give up the rail.
The team was on top by the first call and had a clear advantage as they came down the stretch.
Weappear made a late charge, but DM Nate Dog was able to hold off the field and finish a neck in front, stopping the timer in :45.775. That effort earned a 96 speed index.
DM Nate Dog brought home the $30,000 win- ner’s share of the purse for breeder/owner Derrell Riggan and trainer Clifford Lambert, boosting his total lifetime earnings to $111,034.
Riggan bred DM Nate Dog out of 2-time winner Kat Kora. She was fourth in the 2008 New Mexico Juvenile Challenge-G3. Kat Kora has produced 100% winners from four starters, including top earner Everybuddys Talkin, who won the Shue Fly Stakes-RG3 and the Sunburst Stakes-RG3 earlier this year. She is also the dam of 2016 KOFX-FM Radio Handicap-G2 runner-up DM Ada Kat. DM Nate Dog is her second stakes winner.
Weappear TB (Devon Lane-Reappear) and Duane Sterling finished second for owner/trainer Nancy Summers.
Super Quintons (Quinton’s Gold TB-SS Rigamaroll) was third under L. Martinez for owner/ trainer Hermenegildo G. Aldavaz.
