Blue River Derby
ROCKYS CANDY SHOP
by Michael Compton
Rockys Candy Shop ran his win streak to three races and remained perfect this season with a convincing score in the $130,700 Blue River Derby
at Indiana Grand on July 21.
With Jose Beltran aboard for owner Lance
Finlinson and trainer Randy Smith, Rockys Candy Shop broke alertly on top and took command of the 400-yard test early. Despite drifting a couple of paths in the lane, the gelding maintained a clear lead to the finish, prevailing by 3/4-length. The fourth-fastest qualifier for the event from the July 7 trials, Rockys Candy Shop stopped the timer in :19.745, earning a speed index of 94 in his first stakes tally.
The win improved Rockys Candy Shop’s record to 8-5(1)-1-1(1) and the $71,885 winner’s share of the purse boosted his bankroll to $115,251. Rockys Candy Shop almost achieved a stakes score last year as a close third in the QHRAI SSA Futurity.
Stanley Forbes bred Rockys Candy Shop out of winner Jesses Candy. She has produced 100% money earners from six starters, including Jess Shantastic, who was third in the 2017 Rainbow Futurity Juvenile Stakes. Rockys Candy Shop is her first stakes winner and top earner.
Randy Smith also traines Jessalilsecret (Hez Our Secret-Jess Cranky), who finished second under Berkley Packer for owner Keith Bode.
Atemptin Love (Tempting Dash-Lovemelikethat) was third under Luis Guerrero for owner Mark Michel and trainer Ron Raper.
Beach Treat (Escondido Beach-Treat Me To Cash), Beach Mercedes (Escondido Beach-Jess Alive Bully), Kitty Sixup (Sixes Liaison-Keens Cat), HQH Fancy Pants (Fantastic Corona Jr-Streakin Keep Sake), Apollitical Regard (Apollitical Jess-Cartel Regards), Just Like Sarah (Apollitical Jess-First Smart Stride) and Bono Rhythm (Bono Jazz-Dashs Rhythm) completed the order of finish.
Heartland Futurity
PACKIN SECRETS
by Danny Camp
Trainer Ricardo Martinez came into the Heartland Futurity with three of the top four qualifiers.
It was Packin Secrets who remained undefeated in three outs with a win in the $81,600 Heartland Futurity at Indiana Grand Race Course on July 28.
He came into the finals winning his July 7 trial with the fourth fastest time. He broke from the 6-post in fourth in the finals, quickly took command at the first call. With jockey Sergio Ramirez, Packin Secrets completed the 300 yards in :15.590, crossing the finish line a neck in front. That earned the geld- ing a 93 speed index.
Packin Secrets brought home the $44,880 winner’s share of the purse for owner/trainer Ricardo Martinez, boosting his total lifetime earnings to $54,780.
The gelding holds special meaning for Martinez because the horse is by his sire, Habits Secret.
“For him to win an open race by an Indiana sire is great,” said Martinez. “He was born accidentally & was just over the border of Indiana in Kentucky, so the tim- ing wasn’t right and he is not a registered Indiana bred.”
Packin Secrets is paid into the upcoming QHRAI Stallion Service Auction Futurity.
John A. Wolpert bred Packin Secrets out of lightly raced C U Tamale. Packin Secrets is her only foal.
Filthy Rich (One Dashing Eagle-Miss Scarlet) was second under Shanley Jackson for owner Carolyn Bruce and trainer Matt Frazier.
Chicazum (Dominyun-Zumbaya) and Yordanis Amaro were third for owner/trainer Ricardo Martinez.
Pritty (Coronado Cartel-SFR Fire N Brimstone), Little Haywood (Jess Special-Kool And Collected), Quik Trick (Favorite Cartel-Im Quick Say Bye Bye), BV Bobbie Sue (First Corona Home-BV Carbon Copy), Aka Falsely Accused (Coronado Cartel-Azoomin), Afraid Of Nothing (Separatist-Wrs Quick Wagon) and Myplaceinheaven (Flyingwitheagles-Sixes Pamela) completed the order of finish.
Indiana Grand QHRAI Derby
TRES MY HEART
by Michael Compton
Tres My Heart scored her first stakes victory in the $49,500 Indiana Grand QHRAI Derby on July 7. Ridden by Giovani Vazquez-Gomez, Tres My Heart had a clean break from the 4-post and grabbed a narrow lead soon after. She dueled the length of the lane with Flight To La Jolla, holding that one off to win by a neck at the finish.
In making just the second start of her career, Tres My Heart showed plenty of heart in getting the win, completing the 400 yards in :20.020, good for a career-best 88 speed index.
Tres My Heart finished fourth in her June 23 trial heat after brushing at the start and angling in through the lane.
Tres My Heart brought home the $40,673 win- ner’s share of the purse for owner Maria Stephany Chaparro and trainer Hector Sanchez, boosting her cumulative earnings to $40,923.
Canadian River Quarter Horses LLC bred Tres My Heart out of Famous Mariah, runner-up in both the 2010 Will Rogers Juvenile Challenge and the Q Racing Stakes. She has produced 100% money earners from six starters. Tres My Heart is her first stakes winner.
Flight To La Jolla (Hiclass La Jolla-I Fly American) finished second under Shanley Jackson for owner Dan Frazier and trainer Matt Frazier.
Fastest qualifier and race favorite BS Special (Freighttrain B-Im Quick Say Bye Bye) and jockey Berkley Packer finished third for owner Duane Murphy and trainer Larry Sharp.
Fast Prize Karen (One Famous Eagle-Coronas Fast Prize), Twisted Lil Secret (No Secrets Here-Jess A Lil Twisted), Cappy (Capo De Capi-Pretty And Sweet), Cant Paint This (Paintyourownwagon-If You Saw Rivanne), My Cousin Perry (Tres Seis-Perrys Splash
