Lakeview Dash
SWEET BRU
by Michael Compton
Sweet Bru finished second in last year’s version of the Lakeview Dash Stakes at Fair Grounds, but the 5-year-old mare avenged the defeat with a narrow score in this year’s renewal on Sept. 8 to score the 2nd stakes win of her career.
Contested at 250 yards, the $40,000 event attracted a field of 9. With Damian Martinez in the irons, Sweet Bru raced in contention throughout, dueling with race favorite La Mos Corona. Finishing with a flurry, Sweet Bru, the second wagering choice, defeated La Mos Corona by a head in the test, stop- ping the timer in :13.018 earning a 101 speed index.
With the victory, Sweet Bru now boasts 8 wins, 2 of them in stakes, in 19 career starts and earnings of $128,505 for owner Jose Ortiz and trainer Gary Mason. In addition to the Lakeview Dash, she also captured the Flying Breed Stakes earlier this year at Delta Downs and has placed in 3 additional stakes.
