Pauls Valley Stakes-G3
JESS A HILBILY BONE
by John Moorehouse
The latest running of the Pauls Valley Stakes became a family affair. Jess A Hilbily Bone, the veteran seven-year-old gelding, rallied from more than 5-lengths behind to overtake his full brother Rock A Billy and win the $50,165 Grade 3 event, held April 5 at Remington Park.
Benito Baca brought Jess A Hilbily Bone out of the 2-gate. The gelding angled out, falling behind as Jessa Little Rusty grabbed the early lead. Baca urged his mount to a comeback, and Jess A Hilbily Bone caught Jessa Little Rusty with about 100 yards left in the race, beating his brother by 1/2-length at the wire.
The victory produced a $29,838 payday that improved the total bankroll of Jess A Hilbily Bone to $171,030. His previous stakes wins included last year’s runnings of the Remington Distance Handicap-G2 and the Bobby Dan Crenshaw Memorial, which he also won in 2015. The gelding competed in last year’s version of the Pauls Valley as well, finishing in 3rd place, and he was 2nd in the 2016 Remington Park fixture. His record stands at 39-10(4)-5(1)-5(3).
Rockin J Running Horses home-bred both Jess A Hilbily Bone and runner-up Rock A Billy. Tammy Johnson trains both competitors.
A distance specialist, Jess A Hilbily Bone has now logged four stakes wins—all at distances of 870 yards or greater—and eight of his 10 career victories have come in races at the long distances.
Josh Romero rode Rock A Billy (Rock Solid Jess-Imaginiff) to second. Jessa Little Rusty (Mr
Jess Perry-Rustys Quickid), the pre-race favorite, faded late under Gilbert Ortiz, but still hit the board in third for owner Louis Howard and trainer John Stinebaugh. Followed by Big Spurs (Big Daddy Cartel-Lady Chimes), Blazen Panther (Panther Mountain-Blazen Madie), Trubador Dan (Pool-Jess Amy), Admiral Zoomwalt (Shazoom-Tellin It All) & Dashin JJ (Little Jungle Jet-Dashin Di).

JS HISTORY LESSON
by Tracy Gantz
JS History Lesson gave his rivals a lesson in tenac- ity. JS History Lesson and jockey Jimmy Brooks broke fourth from the 8-post. Apollitical Pence broke on top, but then drifted out, lost ground, and even- tually was disqualified from second and placed third.
