Indiana Championship
BEACH TREAT
by Tracy Gantz
Beach Treat has made every one of his 24 lifetime starts at Indiana Grand Race Course. He has done particularly well this year, racking up five vic- tories going into the $85,102 Indiana Championship
on Oct. 26. When he added that win, he tied the single-season record of Beach Cartel, who was in the beaten field.
With Oscar Macias aboard, Beach Treat ran second early in the 440-yard race to Stinkin Rich. He was able to get to the front by the wire, defeating Flight To La Jolla by a nose in :22.319, posting a 93 speed index over the sloppy track. The $47,278 win- ner’s share boosted his earnings to $213,252.
Ronald Brown owns and trains Beach Treat,
a private yearling purchase from breeder Coronet Farm. Beach Treat’s other 2019 wins include the Hoosier Park Classic Stakes and the Bob Woodard Memorial Classic. Downs Casino Stakes
DAMN STRAIT
by John Moorehouse
After five runner-up finishes in stakes company, Damn Strait ran his way to his first win at that level in the $40,000 Downs Casino Stakes at Albuquerque Downs on Oct. 26. The race was held as part of the undercard of stakes events on Bank of America Challenge Championships day.
The gelding was the class of the field, making
a driving run to victory. After breaking from the 3-post underneath jockey Jorge Torres, Damn Strait led by a head at the first call and remained in the front by that narrow margin at every subsequent juncture, holding off Walcott at the wire.
Stacy Charette-Hill trains Damn Strait, who made the 440-yard trip in :21.567, registering a 91 speed index.
M.C. Stucks owns Damn Strait, a five-year-old gelding who snared his first victory in nine starts this season. For his career, Damn Strait now holds a 5(1)- 11(5)-2 record in 24 starts, with the $22,400 prize from his first-ever stakes win pushing his total earn- ings to $180,301. Damn Strait’s latest second-place effort in a stakes race was Sept. 14 in the Prairie Meadows Championship Challenge-G2 and was one of two previous stakes events for the gelding in 2019.
Bobby D. Cox bred Damn Strait out of winner Hottesticketintown. She has produced 100% win- ners from seven starters. Damn Strait is her first stakes winner.
Walcott (Tee Cos-Jess Maganette) finished a game second for owner Pedro Gutierrez Marquez and trainer Alejandro Chavez. Mauro Salcedo did the riding.
This Is A Deal Too (Dealagame-Lady Lilia) hit the board in third for Pete Scarmardo. The Leon Bard trainee had Francisco Calderon in the irons.

Lobo Derby
JESS SAYING
by John Moorehouse
There’s been no such thing as a sophomore slump for Jess Saying. The filly continued a strong three- year-old campaign with her fourth win of the year and second straight victory in stakes company, tri- umphing in the $35,000 Lobo Derby at Albuquerque Downs on Oct. 26.
A big finish doubled her stakes victory total. After breaking from the 3-post and running second at the first call, Jess Saying surpassed High Flyn Eagle to take the lead by a head and held on from there to win by a neck.
An overwhelming 1-5 favorite at post time,
Jess Saying brought home an $18,200 payday that improved her lifetime earnings to $184,365. She made this victorious 400-yard trip in :19.696, post- ing an 89 speed index. Cynthia Gonzalez trains Jess Saying, who had Mauro Salcedo in the irons.
Jimmy and Angela Vasquez own Jess Saying, who has a 4(2)-2(1)-2 record in nine starts in 2019 after going 0-5 as a rookie although she did place second in last year’s running of the Hobbs America Futurity-G2.
The filly was coming off her first-ever stakes win, posted Sept. 22 in the La Fiesta Derby held at this same track.
Jerry Windham bred Jess Saying out of winner First Down Sixes. She has produced 100% money earners from 11 starters, including top earner and Dash For Cash Futurity-G1 winner Sixes Streak.
