SOUTHERN ELECTRIC
by Tracy Gantz
Two-year-old Paints Southern Electric and DTL Chasin Tale must know each other very well by now.
They both reside in trainer Matt Whitekiller’s barn and have met on the race- track six times.
Each has bested the other in half of those encounters. But Southern Electric won the definitive race, the $48,900 Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Championship Futurity-G1 at Will Rogers Downs, on Nov. 9.
“We’ve kind of been in competition all year,” said Kaye Jones, who with her hus- band, Dan, bred and owns Southern Electric. “They’re both out of Matt’s barns, and they’re both really nice running horses.”
In the Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Championship Futurity-G1 Oct. 19 trials, Southern Electric won his heat wire-to-wire by 1 3/4-lengths for the fastest qualifying time.
In the finals, Southern Electric and jockey Andrew Samaniego broke from the 4-gate on top and, once again, led throughout the 400- yard contest.
“He got on top of the ground early, and he just stayed up there,” said Kaye.
Southern Electric defeated DTL Chasin Tale by 3/4-lengths, stopping the timer in :20.042, which was good for
a 92 speed index.
“He’s been an amazing horse,” stated Kaye after the race. “He’s just been so pro- fessional and consistent.”
In 12 starts, Southern
Electric has won nine times,
with one second and one
third, for total earnings of
$185,398 with the addi-
tion of this winner’s share.
The only time he finished
unplaced came because of a
rough trip in the Oklahoma
Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1 at Remington Park on March 23.
“Our other horse in that race, Babe Wired, ran into the side of him and just knocked him out of it,” said Kaye.
DTL Chasin Tale won that race. Then in the Speedhorse Graham Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1, DTL Chasin Tale finished first with Southern Electric third.
Southern Electric
turned the tables in the Speedhorse Paint & Appalosa Futurity-G1 at Fair Meadows, winning by 1 1/2-length over DTL Chasin Tale.
In the Pot O’ Gold Futurity-G1 at Will Rogers Downs, DTL Chasin Tale beat Southern Electric in their trial. But in the final, Southern Electric won and DTL Chasin Tale finished in fourth place.
Southern Electric also captured the PSBA Futurity-G1 earlier this year,
without DTL Chasin Tale in the field.
At the Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa
Championship Futurity trials, Dean Lester, co-breeder of DTL Chasin Tale, asked Kaye
